Arthur & George

Arthur George [Pdf/ePub] eBook

Arthur & George by Julian Barnes Book Summary:

From one of England’s most esteemed novelists, an utter astonishment that captures an era through one life celebrated internationally and another entirely forgotten. In the vast expanse of late-Victorian Britain, two boys come to life: George, the son of a Midlands vicar, and Arthur, in shabby genteel Edinburgh, both of them feeling at once near to and impossibly distant from the beating heart of Empire. One falls prey to a series of pranks en route to a legal vocation, while the other studies medicine before discovering a different calling entirely, and it is years before their destinies are entwined in a mesmerizing alliance. We follow each through outrageous accusation and unrivaled success, through faith and perseverance and dogged self-recrimination, whether in the dock awaiting complete disgrace or at the height of fame while desperately in love with a woman not his wife, and gradually realize that George is half-Indian and that Arthur becomes the creator of the world’s most famous detective. Ranging from London clubs to teeming prisons, from a lost century to the modern age, this novel is a panoramic revelation of things we thought we knew or else had no clue of, as well as a gripping exploration of what goals drive us toward whatever lies in wait–an experience resounding with issues, no less relevant today, of crime and spirituality; of identity and nationality; of what we think, what we believe and what we can prove.Intriguing, relentless and, most of all, moving, Arthur & George richly extends the reach and achievement of a novelist described by the Philadelphia Inquirer as “a dazzling mind in mercurial flight.”

The Chameleonic Novels of Julian Barnes: Reading 'Flaubert’s Parrot','Arthur & George' and 'England, England'

Arthur George [Pdf/ePub] eBook

The Chameleonic Novels of Julian Barnes: Reading 'Flaubert’s Parrot','Arthur & George' and 'England, England' by Lorena Diana Turc Book Summary:

Julian Barnes is one of the first names which comes to our minds when we think of literary postmodernism. An impressive amount of criticism has been dedicated to his novels, especially Flaubert’s Parrot, which has become synonymous with Barnes. And yet, Barnes’s charm does not reside only in his postmodernism. The writer is unique due to his wit, humor, orality, and the exploration of human nature, with themes such as personal identity, the unreliability of memory, love, death, the relationship between art and life, etc. These themes make Barnes a humanist author, therefore reducing him to postmodernism would be inaccurate. There is also a unique French flavor about all of his writings, and a transparent tenderness for France and its culture. Barnes’s rich cultural knowledge shows him as a cosmopolitan writer. Barnes is a versatile writer: a prolific journalist, a daring novelist, a brilliant essayist. He often mixes genres, which results in hybrid fiction, which attracts the reader through its playfulness. For this reason, critics have named him “the chameleon of British letters”.

The Julian Barnes Booker Prize Finalist Collection, 3-Book Bundle: Flaubert's Parrot; England, England; Arthur & George (Vintage International) by Julian Barnes Book Summary:

Julian Barnes, recipient of the 2011 Man Booker Prize, is one of our most highly regarded novelists. In this collection of three novels spanning his career, we see the broad range of his imagination and literary skill. Barnes’s third published novel, brought him worldwide acclaim and was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. “A high literary entertainment” (The New York Times)  Flaubert’s Parrott is, among other things, a piercing glimpse at the nature of obsession and betrayal, both scholarly and romantic. Barnes’s second shortlisted novel, England, England, is a sly, a satiric invention, in which a visionary tycoon attempts to replicate a jolly old England that probably never really existed: Robin Hood’s men are genuinely merry and the royals all behave themselves impeccably, until, of course, everything begins to go horribly wrong. Finally, Arthur & George re-creates late-Victorian Britain, in which the fates of two vastly different men become entwined, one seeking vindication in a world that looks askance at his origins, the other creating the world’s most famous detective, while keeping his own secrets.

Letters of Arthur George Heath, Fellow of New College, Oxford, and Lieutenant in the 6Th Batt: Royal West Kent Regt (Classic Reprint) by Arthur George Heath Book Summary:

It seems so long ago Since in that musty Flemish lumber-room You made such music flow With master hand, as charmed away our gloom, Drawing from battered, broken keys And rusty wires such harmonies That we forgot war and the shadow of death And caught our breath To hear the hurrying clamour of your themes. So long ago it seems !S olong ago !and now Your sun is set; but in our memory gleams Like some fair after-glow The image of those haunting magic themes. And as our faltering hands essay What you so passionately would play, Far off we hear your music echoing yet; And we forget That you are silent for us, save in dreams. So long ago it seems !J. S. George Barr McCutcheon (July 26, 1866 – October 23, 1928) was an American popular novelist and playwright. His best known works include the series of novels set in Graustark, a fictional East European country, and the novel Brewster's Millions, which was adapted into a play and several films. Life McCutcheon was born in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. His father, despite his own lack of formal education, stressed the value of literature and encouraged his sons to write. During McCutcheon's childhood, his father had a number of jobs that required travel around the county. McCutcheon studied at Purdue University and was a roommate of future humorist George Ade. During his college years, he was editor of the Lafayette Daily Courier and wrote a serial novel of satire about Wabash River life. Although McCutcheon became famous for the Graustark series (the first novel was published in 1901), he hated the characterization of being a Romantic and preferred to be identified with his playwriting. He was the older brother of noted cartoonist John T. McCutcheon and died in Manhattan, New York City, New York. McCutcheon, along with a number of other Indiana writers of the same period, is considered to be part of the Golden Age of Indiana Literature. Arthur Ignatius Keller (1867 New York City - 1924) was a United States painter and illustrator. Biography[edit] He studied art at the National Academy, New York, and in Munich. He worked in oil and watercolor. He illustrated The Virginian (Wister), Kate Bonnet (Stockton), The Right of Way (Gilbert Parker), and the stories of Bret Harte. He won many medals for paintings and some of his oil and water-color productions were acquired by prominent galleries around the world.

Neither Franklin, nor Edison, nor Longfellow, were elevated to the highest posts of official honor. Indeed, public service sometimes interrupts careers which, if left to normal courses, might evolve into far more important spheres of usefulness. Moreover, the call to office is not alone dependent upon qualities for service, but is more or less incidental, contingent upon environment, events, his toric periods. So influential are these factors that, given the period and place, the parentage and ancestry, an attentive student of biog raphy, with a sufficient knowledge of history.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
