Détails: Democratic President Earl Eastwood seeks re-election against the formidable Connecticut Governor Sophia Kallias, a Republican moderate with winning appeal to the critical independent vote. A unifi ed Third World infl uenced by China offers him the global presidency at the United Nations, if he loses the US race. Eastwoods dependency on China curdles his loyalties. He needs Chinas endorsement for the UN job. And Chinese foreign investment is the only viable source of job growth in a badly recessed US economy. The Chinese recruit the fi nancial wizardry of Swiss-based Nikos Rallis to fashion a Swiss-Brazilian network of equity funds. The network launders US investments of Chinese-owned Brazilian companies. They covertly acquire control of Canadian and US shale oil and gas stakes and their pipeline conduits. The network then infi ltrates critical US defense technology sources. Eastwood, a brilliant political tactician and the fi rst African-American president, must act forcefully as he learns of the Chinese scheme. His rigid, West Point ethics are challenged by ambition, and his complicated romantic life.

Détails: August 8, 1944, the war in Europe is bleeding to a close. The scion of a prominent New York family, US Army Lt. Col. Jacob Jay Rosenthal discovers six paintings, the works of great masters, in the bunker of a battle-battered mansion of a Nazi colonel in Frth, Germany. Deftly, he smuggles two of them to a Swiss bank vault, the others to New York City as hes deployed home. Three generations of Rosenthals commit themselves to finding the rightful owners, victims or heirs. Prophetically, Jay shunned restitution by governments, knowing that legitimate claimants would face the deceptions and ineptness of sputtering bureaucracies. The Rosenthals encounter illicit trading networks of ex-Nazis, tax-evading free-trade zone systems, and legal barriers and technicalities lobbied into place by a few great American and European museums. The Rosenthal weltanschaung never curdles, even as Jays daughter-in-law is murdered by hired German gangsters. Another family member dies mysteriously as her small plane hits a mountain near Nice, France, each having come close to finding the rightful owners. As Jacobs legacy seems a lost cause, his grandsons swampy deal to sell the billion-dollar collection suddenly disintegrates and for the right reasons. Set in New York City, the Hamptons, Monte Carlo, and Paris, the realities of illicit trade in Nazi-confiscated art coagulate into a corroborated denial of justice.

Détails: Henri Matisse’s Chapel of the Rosary in Vence, France, is targeted by four adversarial factions. A New York City investment group seeks to buy it. The Vatican demands the security of the chapel’s iconic artistry and its resident Dominican order. The French government fears yet another act of cultural kleptocracy. Finally, two Tunisian French medical doctors are offended by Matisse’s use of Arabic, Moorish, and Islamic decorative arts; and they discover the official dismissal of the early Arabic/Islamic medical science that fostered his full recovery from an early bout of duodenal cancer. They poignantly commit to the destruction of the chapel, unaware that ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) covertly invested in a Matisse masterpiece displayed there.

Détails: Two-hundred long-forgotten French impressionist masterpieces, stashed away in the attic of a New York City brownstone, and valued at $1.6 billion in the festering Asian art markets. Zach ben Meier, the globally prominent art dealer, learns of their existence after reading the deceased painters memoirs in the musty archives of Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Ben Meier ostentatiously implants himself in the Hamptons; what better blind to steal this quarry of art works. The tendrils of Zachs pursuits become complicated. Obstacles emerge everywhere: on Long Island, in New York City, in Monte Carlo; even on the streets of Paris. He forms a bizarre relationship with Adrielle, a former assassin forced into early retirement by the Mossad because of her cloying savagery. Together they fashion and execute a scheme that degenerates into mutual self-entrapment.

Détails: Nikos Rallis is the definitive high-risk investor, whose avarice entraps even the most savvy members of the international business community. He fluidly skirts legal barriers in Monaco, Switzerland, and the United States. His roguish pixie dust suffocates astute targets with outrageous promises of reward. Savvy women front his schemes, captivated only slightly by his charms but much more by the opportunity to share his gains. Perched in his Alpine headquarters, the obsessive secrecy of Switzerland and strategic purpose of Chinese foreign investment become veiled money-laundering tools for his exploitation of a defense contract in Washington’s easy-money climate. Ultimately, his chilling gallery of plundered emotions produces a fatal result that even his legendary diligence never anticipated.

Détails: Every Sunday for almost a century John Cann's family ran the famous snake show in a pit at La Perouse - an area once alive with tiger, brown and black snakes. After growing up with over 300 'pet' snakes in their backyard, John and his brother George took over the snake show from their parents in 1965. By the time John retired in 2010, he'd survived five venomous snake bites. Many of those familiar with John and his shows wouldn't know that he was also an Olympic athlete, a top state rugby league player who played alongside some of the legends of the game, a state champion boxer, an adventurer and a world authority on turtles. The Last Snake Man chronicles John's extraordinary life and times. From wrangling snakes to chasing turtles, from remote country towns to the impenetrable jungles of New Guinea, this is the story of an amazing Australian and his never-ending search for fascinating animals and adventure.

Détails: “One of the best [books] I’ve read about the individuals who make up a country that is all too often regarded as a monolith.” —Jonathan Fenby, Financial Times If China will rule the world one day, who will rule China? There are more than 320 million Chinese between the ages of sixteen and thirty. Children of the one-child policy, born after Mao, with no memory of the Tiananmen Square massacre, they are the first net native generation to come of age in a market-driven, more international China. Their experiences and aspirations were formed in a radically different country from the one that shaped their elders, and their lives will decide the future of their nation and its place in the world. Wish Lanterns offers a deep dive into the life stories of six young Chinese. Dahai is a military child, netizen, and self-styled loser. Xiaoxiao is a hipster from the freezing north. “Fred,” born on the tropical southern island of Hainan, is the daughter of a Party official, while Lucifer is a would-be international rock star. Snail is a country boy and Internet gaming addict, and Mia is a fashionista rebel from far west Xinjiang. Following them as they grow up, go to college, find work and love, all the while navigating the pressure of their parents and society, Wish Lanterns paints a vivid portrait of Chinese youth culture and of a millennial generation whose struggles and dreams reflect the larger issues confronting China today.

Détails: "Ripley is an unmistakable descendant of Gatsby, that 'penniless young man without a past' who will stop at nothing."—Frank Rich Now part of American film and literary lore, Tom Ripley, "a bisexual psychopath and art forger who murders without remorse when his comforts are threatened" (New York Times Book Review), was Patricia Highsmith's favorite creation. In these volumes, we find Ripley ensconced on a French estate with a wealthy wife, a world-class art collection, and a past to hide. In Ripley Under Ground (1970), an art forgery goes awry and Ripley is threatened with exposure; in The Boy Who Followed Ripley (1980), Highsmith explores Ripley's bizarrely paternal relationship with a troubled young runaway, whose abduction draws them into Berlin's seamy underworld; and in Ripley Under Water (1991), Ripley is confronted by a snooping American couple obsessed with the disappearance of an art collector who visited Ripley years before. More than any other American literary character, Ripley provides "a lens to peer into the sinister machinations of human behavior" (John Freeman, Pittsburgh Gazette).

Détails: A wrongfully imprisoned storyteller spins stories from his jail cell that just might have the power to save him—and take down a corrupt government. Arrested on accusations of witchcraft and treason, Chant finds himself trapped in a cold, filthy jail cell in a foreign land. With only his advocate, the unhelpful and uninterested Consanza, he quickly finds himself cast as a bargaining chip in a brewing battle between the five rulers of this small, backwards, and petty nation. Or, at least, that's how he would tell the story. In truth, Chant has little idea of what is happening outside the walls of his cell, but he must quickly start to unravel the puzzle of his imprisonment before they execute him for his alleged crimes. But Chant is no witch—he is a member of a rare and obscure order of wandering storytellers. With no country to call his home, and no people to claim as his own, all Chant has is his wits and his apprentice, a lad more interested in wooing handsome shepherds than learning the ways of the world. And yet, he has one great power: his stories in the ears of the rulers determined to prosecute him for betraying a nation he knows next to nothing about. The tales he tells will topple the Queens of Nuryevet and just maybe, save his life.

Détails: This is a book of Russian folklore retold for young people and the young at heart. The tales are a good sampling of Slavic marchen. The stories in this book are those that Russian peasants tell their children and each other. This is a book written far away in Russia, for English children who play in deep lanes with wild roses above them in the high hedges, or by the small singing becks that dance down the gray fells at home. Russian fairyland is quite different. Under the windows of the author's house, the wavelets of the Volkhov River are beating quietly in the dusk. A gold light burns on a timber raft floating down the river. Beyond the river in the blue midsummer twilight is the broad Russian steppe and the distant forests of Novgorod. Somewhere in that forest of great trees--a forest so big that the forests of England are little woods beside it--is the hut where old Peter sits at night and tells these stories to his grandchildren. In Russia hardly anybody is too old for fairy stories, and the author even overheard soldiers on their way to the WWI talking of very wise and very beautiful princesses as they drank their tea by the side of the road. He believed there must be more fairy stories told in Russia than anywhere else in the world. In this book are a few of those he liked best. The author spent time in Russia during World War I as a journalist for the radical British newspaper, the Daily News, meeting among others, Lenin and Trotsky and was also known in the London bohemian artistic scene. 33% of the net from the sale of this book will be donated to charities for educational purposes.
