Détails: Award-winning author Tom Angleberger flexes his comic muscle in this hairy adventure story with twists at every turn. Regular kid Lenny Flem Jr. is the only one standing between his evil-genius best friend—Casper, a master of disguise and hypnosis—and world domination. It all begins when Casper spends money from his granny on a spectacularly convincing fake mustache, the Heidelberg Handlebar #7. With it he’s able rob banks, amass a vast fortune, and run for president. Is Lenny the only one who can see through his disguise? And will he be able to stop Casper from taking over the world? Praise for Fake Mustache “There’s no twist too goofy or absurd as Angleberger pulls out all the stops for this unabashedly silly story.”—Publishers Weekly "Angleberger’s foot-on-the-floor zaniness helps pull it off, fueled by a steady stream of gags and utter ridiculousness that make Saturday-morning cartoons seem reasonable in comparison. Pure, unfiltered hilarity." —Booklist "The 2012 campaign season just got a little hairier. Kids will delight in the various ways in which Casper exploits his power over grownups." —The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books "Appropriately goofy." —The Horn Book "Angleberger severs all ties with sanity in his latest farce for preteens with hilarious results. There's plenty of action and goofiness. Fans of Angleberger's previous efforts won't be disappointed. Total deadpan lunacy." —Kirkus Reviews "This is a cute, although improbable, story about two best friends, Lenny and Casper, who live in the small town of Hairsprinkle.. Jodie brings many positive traits of a strong, female hero." —Library Media Connection

Détails: Murder To Music Rick Harrow, a British racehorse trainer, and his Kentucky-born wife, Happy, are thrilled when twin opera stars, Fran and Carla Purcell, enter their yard. Shortly after the twins buy horses, Carla is murdered. Three more famous artists in the music world are murdered, as Happy hones her skills as a sleuth to find the serial killer, her quest taking her to Australia, Scotland and Monaco. Murder In Marriage Rick Harrow, now the father of three, and his wife, Happy, become embroiled in a double death, which the police cannot decide is a suicide/murder, or what? While working as a horse trainer and buyer in Miami, Rick had strayed from the marital bed while Happy gave birth to their third child. Rick has had a scorching affair with Lois Blair, a wanton wife from the central-Florida town of Sunblair. On Christmas morning, Lois's step-son arrives at the Harrow's rented Miami cottage, and accuses Rick of having murdered his father. Had Rick killed the Senior Blair, an eminent attorney and scion of the founders of Sunblair? Had he murdered Lois as a cover-up? Happy travels to the central-Florida horse country, to Disney World, and into a swamp area to do her sleuthing. Murdered Mothers Rick Harrow, who has come up in the world of valuable racehorses thanks to winning races, particularly one in Tokyo with his Kentucky-born wife Happy in the saddle, suffers through an excruciating experience in Miami before being thrust into the throes of a horrific series of murders in Kentucky. There, in what was the peaceful town of Honeyville, the Harrows are caught up in four murders by a serial killer who targets nursing mothers. Meanwhile, they attend the equine Olympic events in Hong Kong, travel to Dubai, where again a femme fatale enters their lives in the shape of Mafalda, an Egyptian seductress who veers from international playgirl to Muslim Fundamentalist. Détails: "Thought-provoking.... A lovely testament to horses and women from all walks of life."—Karen Stone, Chicago Tribune In a phenomenon too prevalent to be mere chance, little girls all over the Western world wake one day to find themselves completely taken over by the love of all things equine. Melissa Holbrook Pierson was one of those horse-crazy girls who later returned to riding with a new appreciation for the nature of horses. Melding memoir, sociology, history, anecdote, and a bit of prose poetry, Dark Horses and Black Beauties delves beneath the shallow hypotheses explaining women's connection to horses to look at how this communication with another animal opens us up to a new apprehension of the larger "natural" world. "A fearless book: unflinching, honest, and kind."—Village Voice "The play of her mind...is subtle and quick; coltish, one wants to say, and one would be right."—The New York Times, Richard Bernstein "So beautifully written that it instantly captivates."—Newark Star-Ledger "She muses to deep and lyrical effect in her new collection of slender and delicate essays on horses and women."—Richard Bernstein, The New York Times "A meditation intended to dispel those tiresome Freudian theories aimed at the universal fascination women seem to have with horses."—The New York Times Book Review, Jillian Dunham "A fearless book: unflinching, earnest, and kind."—Village Voice, Emily Jenkins "This is a poignant, charming, and realistic book."—Maxine Kumin "Whoever likes animals will love this book, and better yet, whoever seeks to fathom the mysterious relationships between ourselves and other species will be transported."—Elizabeth Marshall Thomas, author of The Hidden Life of Dogs "As passionate as it is informative....Rich in history, romance, and charm, Pierson's devotion to horses is always engaging, and most of all, moving."—Brenda Peterson, co-editor of Intimate Nature: The Bond Between Women and Animals "Pierson's...writing...is well suited to her subject, containing bits of breathless enthusiasm one moment and peaceful contemplation the next."—Publishers Weekly

Détails: “Alternately funny, entertaining, and heartbreaking, The Swan is a fictional memoir about love, death and what a family can―and cannot―endure.” —Publishers Weekly Indianapolis, 1957. Ten-year-old Aaron Cooper has witnessed the death of his younger sister, Pookie, and the trauma has left him unwilling to speak. Aaron copes with life’s challenges by disappearing into his own imagination, envisioning being captain of the Kon Tiki, driving his sled in the snowy Klondike, and tiger hunting in India. He is guarded by secret friends like deposed Hungarian Count Blurtz Shemshoian and Blurtz’s wonder dog, Nipper, who protect him from the Creature from the Black Lagoon—who hides in Aaron’s closet at night. The tales he constructs for himself, the real life stories he is witness to, and his mother’s desperate efforts to bring her son back from the brink, all come to a head at an emotional family dinner. “Funny, poignant and as endearing as its central character, The Swan is a wholly original tribute to childhood resilience.” —San Jose Mercury News “Had Kurt Vonnegut, William Saroyan, J. D. Salinger, Carlos Castaneda, Raymond Carver and James Thurber ever gathered at a writer’s workshop to co-author a short novel, the product might well have been The Swan.” —Terre Haute Tribune Star “A surreal study of a grief observed indirectly, The Swan serves as a testament to the unbridled power of childhood vision, even and especially in the wake of tragedy.” —Bloom magazine

Détails: What kind of tracks do animals make in our lives? My Friend Flika is a favorite tale of a boy and his horse, and National Velvet remains a favorite about a girl and her horse. Countless stories exist about boys and their dogs even though our faithful friends are never allotted our same number of years. As adults we can consider animals our protectors to bite our enemies, sniff out bombs and cancerous tumors, or help us travel using their eyes. We raise livestock to market as meat. We ride animals in races and rodeos, train them for circuses, and send them into outer space before we are sure we can go. But what effects do they leave on us? Without animals, the people in this collection of stories would have lived different lives. On an Iowa farm, when Lizbet is too old for dolls but too young for boys, her horse Sulie becomes her perfect companion. Lizbet goes to college during the turbulent Sixties where she must search for another place as peaceful as the farm and a friend as devoted as her horse. On another Midwestern farm, Pru watches her children grow up, satisfied they are safe from the violence she saw in New York City. She doesn’t realize they are all in danger from her brother-in-law, a returning veteran who claims he can handle their Holstein bull. Jackie loves all kinds of pets like papillons and Jack Russell terriers, but her sister Jeannette demands her complete devotion. A stroke leaves actor/director Caleb Pavlock unable to speak or remember the lies he has told. How long will his current lover care for him when he can only bark like the dogs that he hates? And did Greasy, a Maine coon cat, come to Duff and Jorie at the end of their lives so that they would never be separated?

Détails: Nathaniel Hawthorne presents a multilayered story consisting of six Greek myths that are told from a unique perspective and appeals to all readers, specifically children. His writing style transcends age to deliver a family-friendly narrative. A Wonder-Book for Girls and Boys is a compilation of classic stories inspired by Greek mythology. Hawthorne’s interpretation is filtered through the fictional character, Eustace Bright, a college student who’s entertaining a group of children. The book features “The Gorgon's Head,” a popular epic that follows Perseus and his quest to slay Medusa. There’s also “The Paradise of Children,” a cautionary tale about Pandora’s box, and “The Golden Touch,” which recalls the story of King Midas. Originally published in 1851, A Wonder-Book for Girls and Boys continues to stand the test of time. Its stories are literary staples that have been adapted for multiple mediums. The collection also produced the sequel, Tanglewood Tales, which was released in 1853. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of A Wonder-Book for Girls and Boys is both modern and readable.

Détails: With the 2006 publication of The God Delusion, the name Richard Dawkins became a byword for ruthless skepticism and "brilliant, impassioned, articulate, impolite" debate (San Francisco Chronicle). his first memoir offers a more personal view. His first book, The Selfish Gene, caused a seismic shift in the study of biology by proffering the gene-centered view of evolution. It was also in this book that Dawkins coined the term meme, a unit of cultural evolution, which has itself become a mainstay in contemporary culture. In An Appetite for Wonder, Richard Dawkins shares a rare view into his early life, his intellectual awakening at Oxford, and his path to writing The Selfish Gene. He paints a vivid picture of his idyllic childhood in colonial Africa, peppered with sketches of his colorful ancestors, charming parents, and the peculiarities of colonial life right after World War II. At boarding school, despite a near-religious encounter with an Elvis record, he began his career as a skeptic by refusing to kneel for prayer in chapel. Despite some inspired teaching throughout primary and secondary school, it was only when he got to Oxford that his intellectual curiosity took full flight. Arriving at Oxford in 1959, when undergraduates "left Elvis behind" for Bach or the Modern Jazz Quartet, Dawkins began to study zoology and was introduced to some of the university's legendary mentors as well as its tutorial system. It's to this unique educational system that Dawkins credits his awakening, as it invited young people to become scholars by encouraging them to pose rigorous questions and scour the library for the latest research rather than textbook "teaching to" any kind of test. His career as a fellow and lecturer at Oxford took an unexpected turn when, in 1973, a serious strike in Britain caused prolonged electricity cuts, and he was forced to pause his computer-based research. Provoked by the then widespread misunderstanding of natural selection known as "group selection" and inspired by the work of William Hamilton, Robert Trivers, and John Maynard Smith, he began to write a book he called, jokingly, "my bestseller." It was, of course, The Selfish Gene. Here, for the first time, is an intimate memoir of the childhood and intellectual development of the evolutionary biologist and world-famous atheist, and the story of how he came to write what is widely held to be one of the most important books of the twentieth century.
