Détails: Legend says a phoenix will rise again—but all that remains of the immortal bird are ashes and whispered fairy tales... Lyra Adams enjoys her job as a rare books dealer, but when an angry wizard barges into her store and demands she fork over a unique tome from the antiquities section, she's not about to let him get away with grand larceny without a fight. Except it's suddenly very difficult to defend her wares, seeing as the wizard turned her into some kind of weird red bird by flinging a handful of ashes in her face. Her only hope of returning to her normal, human self lies in the hands of the one man she never wanted to see again: her lying, stealing, sorcerous scumbag ex, James Pierce. The same light-fingered thief who tried to steal that very same tome from her a few days before. She knows she can’t trust James with her heart or her inventory. Can she trust him to turn her back?

Détails: Praise for The Phoenix “The constant pressures from the men she dared to love caused Melanie to crumble under their attacks. She is now soaring on the wings of an eagle, flying high into the deep blue sky, moving forward to fulfill her destiny. A must-read!” —Minister Vickie Robertson, The Fellowship of Faith Church, Huntsville, AL Uniquely Christian, uniquely honest – this book amazes, delights, saddens and ultimately encourages each reader who knows the joy and pain inside a marriage. With shocking honesty, author Dian Griffin Jackson tells a story of love, abuse and the hard work of rebuilding. A must read book for pastor and parishioner alike – anyone ready to know the reality of resurrection. —Rev. Dr. Nancy Ellett Allison, Pastor, Holy Covenant United Church of Christ, Charlotte, NC Melanie Bell—a university graduate, devoted wife and mother, pastor, and many things in between—searches for the love and acceptance that has eluded her since birth. The Phoenix – Rising from the Ashes follows Melanie’s struggles as a teenage mom who became a wife and mother of two early in life and as a woman who loved her husband and desired to please him above all else and make him happy. During therapy, she learns there’s a thirsty, hungry, needy little girl inside who is looking for her parents’ love and acceptance. After leaving her abusive husband, she sets out to find a man who will love her enough to help her right the wrongs both she and her mother experienced. She is also determined to reconcile the disenfranchised little girl with the beautiful, phenomenal woman she is certain the Creator has made her to be. A story of growing up too soon, this novel shares the journey of a woman who has been through the fires and storms of life and realized that—despite the teachings of the church intended to dehumanize her by telling her she is dirty, wretched, and unclean—she has had God’s favor her entire life.

Détails: This story depicts a biker and his experiences of becoming involved with people in a small Oklahoma community in the mideighties. Set in a time before the custom-bike craze with its TV shows and celebrity riders, this tale tries to present real situations because they are based on things that either happened to me or around me (or I just made up a good lie). This man, injured in the Vietnam War, medically discharged, having to relearn to walk and being labeled an outsider upon his return, becomes involved with a violent streetwise motorcycle gang and their drug- and alcohol-induced law-breaking ways. Becoming unhappy with the hard-core biker lifestyle he is living in California, he is miraculously freed from his club ties and takes on a new identity. With help from other helpful nonpatched bikers, bound only by their love of the freedom of the road, he works his way across the western states, doing heavy equipment work, winding up in the little town of Stigler, Oklahoma. There he meets various characters who make his life interesting. He befriends an old rancher with a secret and eventually goes to a bike rally near Wilburton, Oklahoma, where he meets and falls in love with a redhead who also has a biker-related past. Together, they forge a life involving motorcycles, a local bar and its denizens, fellow construction workers, the local law, run-ins with a former gang member, and help to make an old man’s dreams come true.

Détails: This book will only take you a few hours to read, but it could change your life forever! Throughout life, everyone faces challenges, setbacks and temporary failures. Those who learn to rise from these ashes of defeat are the ones who become truly successful. The word phoenix has three primary meanings: 1. A mythical bird of great beauty fabled to live 500 or 600 years in the Arabian wilderness, to burn itself up from its own fire, and later to rise from its ashes in the freshness of youth and live through another cycle of years: often an emblem of immortality or of reborn idealism or hope, 2. A person or thing of peerless beauty or excellence; paragon. 3. A person or thing that has become renewed or restored after suffering calamity or apparent annihilation. Using these three definitions as the driving force for The Phoenix Philosophy, Author Mikeal R. Morgan clearly articulates the proven principles that have allowed him to rise from a poor, uneducated, depressed youth, to a successful husband, father, sales professional, business leader, motivational speaker and President of Phoenix Training Innovations. Mikeal has dedicated years to observing, learning and collecting stories from other successful individuals who have also overcome tough challenges and devastating failures, in order to rise renewed by the will, faith, and strength that resides in each of us. Throughout this book, you will be forced to think and answer tough questions about yourself. Learn to improve, love, and appreciate your life. Learn to rise to success, even from the ashes of defeat, to a smarter, stronger and better you! Détails: In Egyptian mythology, the phoenix was a bird that rose from the ashes of death to attain immortality. In this book, spiritual healer and counselor Lily Fairchilde takes us on a magical voyage during which we learn, in the words of those who have gone on before, what awaits each of us after life on Earth is over. What happens when a child dies, a friend commits suicide, or a lost soul finally ends a dark, Earthly life? In Song of the Phoenix, we encounter many different souls, accompanied by their spiritual guides of angels, who explain the significance of their stories. Rather than a place of reward and punishment, the afterlife is a wondrous experience of ongoing growth and understanding. - Ruth surrendered to despair after her husband's wartime death and committed suicide, also killing her unborn child. Terrified of punishment, her soul resisted passing over until her guardian angel convinced her that only love and understanding awaited her. - Joey was a six-year-old who was killed in a sledding accident and whose parents agonized over his death. He yearns only to reassure them that he has entered a glorious world of brilliant light. - Edith and Frank are troubled spirits who cleave to earthly souls who share their addictions to overeating and alcohol, But their guardians refuse to abandon them until they realize that a far more rewarding joy awaits them if only they accept it. - Xavier has led an evil life as a sadistic killer, and his soul suffers torment in a wasteland of isolation and pain. But even he has a guardian angel, who patiently waits for him to receive the love and encouragement that will guide him home. These extraordinary personal stories, told by Lily Fairchilde, bring a message of glowing hope and comfort to all those who have suffered the agony of loss or are confronting the fear of death themselves. Profound and compassionate, this book shows the living how to make peace with death.

Détails: “As a junior officer and the lowest ranking 'gopher' at the creation of these forces, I saw how the several Services had great reservations regarding SOF to the point of studied dislike of it and a distinct distaste for its inclusion as a member of their force structure. The single lone exception was Army Chief of Staff Shy Myer, who saw terrorism and asymmetrical warfare as the emerging National threat and worked to build a missing capability. He did this as a lone wolf in that much of the Army leadership as well as the other Services, looked upon SOF as a high-risk loose cannon on their stable conventional deck.” Phoenix Rising recounts the paradoxical birth of SOF through the prism of Operation Eagle Claw, the failed attempt to rescue fifty-two Americans held hostage in the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. When terrorists captured the Embassy on November 4, 1979, the Joint Chiefs of Staff quickly realized that the United States lacked the military capability to launch a rescue. There was no precedent for the mission, a mission that came with extraordinary restrictions and required a unique force to take it on. With no existent command structure or budget, this force would have to be built from scratch in utmost secrecy, and draw on every branch of the U.S. military. Keith Nightingale, then a major, was Deputy Operations Officer and the junior member of Joint Task Force Eagle Claw, commanded by Major General James Vaught. Based on Nightingale’s detailed diary, Phoenix Rising vividly describes the personalities involved, the issues they faced, and the actions they took, from the conception of the operation to its hair-raising launch and execution. His historically significant post-analysis of Eagle Claw gives unparalleled insight into how a very dedicated group of people from the Chief of Staff of the Army to lower-ranking personnel subjugated personal ambition to grow the forces necessary to address the emerging terrorist threat—a threat which the majority of uniformed leadership and their political masters denied in 1979. The Special Operations capability of the United States today is the ultimate proof of their success.

Détails: An “insightful cultural history of the mythical, self-immolating bird” from Ancient Egypt to contemporary pop culture by the author of The Book of Gryphons (Library Journal). The phoenix, which rises again and again from its own ashes, has been a symbol of resilience and renewal for thousands of years. But how did this mythical bird come to play a part in cultures around the world and throughout human history? Here, mythologist Joseph Nigg presents a comprehensive biography of this legendary creature. Beginning in ancient Egypt, Nigg’s sweeping narrative discusses the many myths and representations of the phoenix, including legends of the Chinese, where it was considered a sacred creature that presided over China’s destiny; classical Greece and Rome, where it appears in the writings of Herodotus and Ovid; medieval Christianity, in which it came to embody the resurrection; and in Europe during the Renaissance, when it was a popular emblem of royals. Nigg examines the various phoenix traditions, the beliefs and tales associated with them, their symbolic and metaphoric use, and their appearance in religion, bestiaries, and even contemporary popular culture, in which the ageless bird of renewal is employed as a mascot and logo. “An exceptional work of scholarship.”—Publishers Weekly

If I can just make it to the next minute...then I might have a chance to live; I might have a chance to be something more than just a struggling crackhead. From the Ashes is a remarkable memoir about hope and resilience, and a revelatory look into the life of a Métis-Cree man who refused to give up. Abandoned by his parents as a toddler, Jesse Thistle briefly found himself in the foster-care system with his two brothers, cut off from all they had known. Eventually the children landed in the home of their paternal grandparents, whose tough-love attitudes quickly resulted in conflicts. Throughout it all, the ghost of Jesse’s drug-addicted father haunted the halls of the house and the memories of every family member. Struggling with all that had happened, Jesse succumbed to a self-destructive cycle of drug and alcohol addiction and petty crime, spending more than a decade on and off the streets, often homeless. Finally, he realized he would die unless he turned his life around. In this heartwarming and heart-wrenching memoir, Jesse Thistle writes honestly and fearlessly about his painful past, the abuse he endured, and how he uncovered the truth about his parents. Through sheer perseverance and education—and newfound love—he found his way back into the circle of his Indigenous culture and family. An eloquent exploration of the impact of prejudice and racism, From the Ashes is, in the end, about how love and support can help us find happiness despite the odds.

Détails: Helen Ross Lee's memoir The Phoenix Rising shows us a successful nurse, mum, and hang gliding champion at the top of her game. In 2008, she suffered a tragic accident in a practice takeoff maneuver that resulted in a grievous traumatic brain injury (TBI), which precipitated a coma and temporary amnesia. Helen refused to give up or give in, regardless of the gloomy prognosis from medical experts. Her ten-year struggle to rehabilitate and return to work (with the support of her family) will inspire anyone who has experienced or cared for someone with stroke, TBI, and other long term chronic illness. "The Phoenix Rising is an original and bold addition to a growing number of memoirs by survivors of TBI. Shedding light on the TBI epidemic across the globe, Australian writer Lee guides readers from her days as a dedicated nurse, mother, wife, and adventurous hang glider pilot, and down into continual torment that is life and recovery from TBI--her honesty is stunning in detail." --Kelly Bouldin-Darmofal, TBI survivor, author of 101 Tips for Recovering from Traumatic Brain Injury "Go, Helen! You deserve all the recognition possible. Your book details an amazing fight for life and an incredible will to live that life to the fullest." --Barbara Proudman, editor, Tamborine Times, Queensland "The Phoenix Rising is an ideal read for all people whom have been told that recovery is impossible, that hard work will not pay off, and that life with a acquired brain injury cannot be fruitful. Moreover, this book is a unique inspirational story from which all will draw strength and motivation to use in our individual lives." --Travis Docherty, MPhty, B Ex Sc, assistant professor, Bond University, director of Allied Health Services Australia "It is a privilege to know you, Helen, and your story is worth telling the world about and sharing! Your determination will no doubt inspire others to never, ever give up! I thank you for not holding back and sharing intimate details of your life with the reader. I am so honoured to know the writer in person and to have been able to follow her amazing recovery over the years. You and your book are truly inspirational." --Michaela Kloeckner, ceramic artist, Gold Coast Potters Association "This is an incredible story of a journey from devastation to recovery in an amazing way. The story inspires hope for anyone who has suffered loss. I am also privileged to have known Helen since the accident and have witnessed her amazing recovery to date. Détails: David has no greater wish than to explore the mountains behind his new home in North Carolina and as he does he finds a wonder never dreamed of, the Phoenix. The Phoenix introduces David to an endless list of his friends from mythology and in the process opens David's eyes to the wide world both the unseen world and seen world. In the unseen world David and the Phoenix share many adventures all the while a scientist is trying to capture the Phoenix to prove to the world that the bird is real. The phoenix takes David on "educational field trips" to meet sea monsters, fauns and other creatures. Plus they hatch a hysterical plot to scare off an over eager scientist from the phoenix's trail. David learns some valuable lessons about life, one is that nothing remains the same as one grows up. The other is... well perhaps you should read the book yourself and find your own lessons within the pages. A well written story, "David and the Phoenix" has no particular time setting so that it could very well be placed in current time. It brings back to me memories of times when life was much simpler, more pleasant and without the problems we as adults face. It's a story of childhood and the dreams that children of every age share and which we all to soon leave behind. Of course, there is the traditional fiery death of the phoenix in the story.
