Détails: The Eagles Cry is set in Oklahoma in 1950 after decades of events that have tested the fiber of family and community strength; The Dust Bowl, the Great Depression, and World War II. As a community emerges still intact from these external adversities, they discover that an internal malevolence may be their downfall. A murderer has suddenly started killing women and children in the particularly unworldly, small town of Bugtussel. People are afraid for their families, and afraid of one another, as the only outside suspects in the case, the hobos, have spread the word to avoid Bugtussel. Now a community must look within to see who among them is trying to tear them apart. Meet colorful characters like Hobo Moses, Ole Grannie Wise Owl, Sam Snakekiller, Billy, the goat, and Ole Dolly, the horse, through the experiences of two little girls, Gracie and Willie Jones. In the tradition of To Kill a Mockingbird large social issues tested by childhood innocence become less complicated and more terrifying. With these two adventuress and imaginative little girls, though, a family and ultimately a community find out how to rise up on wings like eagles and overcome the storms. Book Excerpt Granpa Shares a Vision Gracie had awakened suddenly. She heard the front screen groan as Granpa opened and closed it. She heard the creek of protest from the porch as he let himself down on his favorite spot just to the right of the steps. She climbed out of bed trying not to wake Willie, but before she could slip her dress over her head and get out the door, Willie was beside her. They came as quietly as they could through the protesting front screen and silently crept into Granpas lap. Listen, he whispered. Watch. The eastern light turned crimson as the world became brighter around them. The rooster dutifully announced the beginning of another day. The chickens emerged clucking, milling around, scratching for the early worm, and occasionally fighting over it. Willie wriggled to get a more comfortable position. Gracie held her breath. Something about Granpa told her this was very important to her. Look. It was almost a sigh. The girls gaze followed Granpas pointing finger to the sky. They saw a small, dark spot on the horizon, appearing as if by signal from Granpa. Soon a great bird came closer. As it grew near, another approached. They are high, high, Gracie thought. Then she heard a cry from the first; an answering cry from the other. The clearness, the sharpness of the call touched something deep inside her. She heard Willies sigh of awe. Thats the eagle, Granpa said. The eagles circled, calling to each other. One came close and rose again with a cry. Gracie was lost in them. She felt their freedom and joy burst in her heart. She cried from joy. Willie held tighter to Granpa. The chicken noises faded away and the three of them were lost in the eagles. The three were eagles. They were flying in the heavens calling to each other recognition as they passed. Granpa held them close, his love like a warm comforter. When your father died, he said, I had a time of anguish and bitterness. I couldnt seem to get out of the darkness around me. Then, Jesus gave me a vision. I saw ice-topped mountains, with several eagles flyin amongst them. Each time one would pass the other, they would cry in recognition to each other. They flew high above the earth, tangled in nothin; their eyes on heaven. Granpa was quiet for awhile, then he said with compassion, Without the joy of the Lord, life is like them chickens over there. Heads close to the ground, peckin out a livin, fightin over the earth worm. I was like that rooster, risin early in the mornin and gettin lost in the earth and scratchin. Sadness was there for a moment. Then, he finished, I learned some things you jist had to turn over to the Lord, and fly with the eagles. They both hugged Granpa close. Im a

Caldera has forever been divided into the animals who walk by night and those who walk by day. Nightwalker panthers, like young Mez and her sister, have always feared daywalkers as creatures of myth and legend. Then Mez discovers that she can enter the daylight world, and she rushes to discover what it means to cross the Veil—and the extent of her newly uncovered magical powers—before a reawakened evil threatens everything she’s ever known. Now, with an unlikely group of animal friends—including a courageous bat, a scholarly tree frog, and an anxious monkey—Mez must unravel an ancient mystery and face her greatest fears, if they are to have any hope of saving their endangered rainforest home.

Détails: From the earliest records of history we learn that man has ever been envious of the birds, and of all other winged creatures. He has longed and striven to fly. He has also signally failed to do so. We say “failed” advisedly, because his various attempts in that direction have usually resulted in disappointment and broken bones. As to balloons, we do not admit that they fly any more than do ships; balloons merely float and glide, when not otherwise engaged in tumbling, collapsing, and bursting. This being so, we draw attention to the fact that the nearest approach we have yet made to the sensation of flying is that achieved by rushing down a long, smooth, steep hill-road on a well-oiled and perfect ball-bearings bicycle! Skating cannot compare with this, for that requires exertion; bicycling down hill requires none. Hunting cannot, no matter how splendid the mount, for that implies a certain element of bumping, which, however pleasant in itself, is not suggestive of the smooth swift act of flying. We introduce this subject merely because thoughts somewhat similar to those which we have so inadequately expressed were burning in the brain of a handsome and joyful young man one summer morning not long ago, as, with legs over the handles, he flashed—if he did not actually fly—down one of our Middlesex hills on his way to London. Détails: Gadamer's writing on art is typically seen as supporting his philosophical theory of truth. Drawing together a coherent theory of the work of art from the corpus of Gadamer's writings, this is the first full-length examination of Gadamer's theory of the work of art in its own right. Close readings of Gadamer's treatment of aesthetics in Truth and Method, as well as his many essays and lectures on art, highlight an approach to art that is not ancillary to historical, philosophical, and linguistic themes. The book establishes Gadamer's position on the criteria for the judgment of art, and the balance between production and reception from a hermeneutic perspective. Offering useful insights to some of the most tantalizing and obscure Gadamerian themes, this not only makes a significant addition to Gadamer scholarship, but provides aesthetics scholars, critics, and interpreters with new ways of thinking about art.

Détails: "The first edition of this Handbook is built on surveys by well-known figures from around the world and around the intellectual world, reflecting several different theoretical predilections, balancing coverage of enduring questions and important recent work. Those strengths are now enhanced by adding new chapters and thoroughly revising almost all other chapters, partly to reflect ways in which the field has changed in the intervening twenty years, in some places radically. The result is a magnificent volume that can be used for many purposes." David W. Lightfoot, Georgetown University "The Handbook of Linguistics, Second Edition is a stupendous achievement. Aronoff and Rees-Miller have provided overviews of 29 subfields of linguistics, each written by one of the leading researchers in that subfield and each impressively crafted in both style and content. I know of no finer resource for anyone who would wish to be better informed on recent developments in linguistics." Frederick J. Newmeyer, University of Washington, University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University "Linguists, their students, colleagues, family, and friends: anyone interested in the latest findings from a wide array of linguistic subfields will welcome this second updated and expanded edition of The Handbook of Linguistics. Leading scholars provide highly accessible yet substantive introductions to their fields: it's an even more valuable resource than its predecessor." Sally McConnell-Ginet, Cornell University "No handbook or text offers a more comprehensive, contemporary overview of the field of linguistics in the twenty-first century. New and thoroughly updated chapters by prominent scholars on each topic and subfield make this a unique, landmark publication."Walt Wolfram, North Carolina State University This second edition of The Handbook of Linguistics provides an updated and timely overview of the field of linguistics. The editor's broad definition of the field ensures that the book may be read by those seeking a comprehensive introduction to the subject, but with little or no prior knowledge of the area. Building on the popular first edition, The Handbook of Linguistics, Second Edition features new and revised content reflecting advances within the discipline. New chapters expand the already broad coverage of the Handbook to address and take account of key changes within the field in the intervening years. It explores: psycholinguistics, linguistic anthropology and ethnolinguistics, sociolinguistic theory, language variation and second language pedagogy. With contributions from a global team of leading linguists, this comprehensive and accessible volume is the ideal resource for those engaged in study and work within the dynamic field of linguistics.

Détails: “Once an Eagle is simply the best work of fiction on leadership in print.” —General Martin E. Dempsey, 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Required reading for West Point and Marine Corps cadets, Once An Eagle is the story of one special man, a soldier named Sam Damon, and his adversary over a lifetime, fellow officer Courtney Massengale. Damon is a professional who puts duty, honor, and the men he commands above self-interest. Massengale, however, brilliantly advances by making the right connections behind the lines and in Washington's corridors of power. Beginning in the French countryside during the Great War, the conflict between these adversaries solidifies in the isolated garrison life marking peacetime, intensifies in the deadly Pacific jungles of World War II, and reaches its treacherous conclusion in the last major battleground of the Cold War—Vietnam. Now reissued with a new foreword by acclaimed historian Carlo D'Este, here is an unforgettable story of a man who embodies the best in our nation—and in us all.

Détails: To both his and Braks surprise, the stone glowed brightly for an instance and Brak abruptly halted his advance. Eyes wide in fear, Urak stared confusingly at Brak. His adversary froze into a zombie-like state, his eyes filled with indescribable terror. Urak, still holding the stone, curiously waved his hand in front of Braks face. Receiving no response, and recognizing an opportunity to ensure his own survival, Urak withdrew his short dagger from its sheath and plunged it into Braks belly. The dagger penetrated the yellowish skin without resistance and Brak fell dead to the floor with only a quiet moan escaping his lips. The stone pulsed brightly at the deed and Urak experienced a sense of power flowing through his limbs. He had never before experienced such satisfaction. At that moment he realized that he had a weapon whose secret would gain him the power that he had always craved. This secret would assure his rise to chieftain of the clans.

Détails: Egyptologist Gerald Massey challenged readers in A Book of the Beginnings to consider the argument that Egypt was the birthplace of civilization and that the widespread monotheistic vision of man and the metaphysical was, in fact, based on ancient Egyptian mythos. In The Natural Genesis, Massey delivers a sequel, delving deeper into his compelling polemic. In Volume I, he offers a more intellectual, fine-tuned analysis of the development of society out of Egypt. From the simplest signs (numbers, the cross) to the grandest archetypes (darkness, the mother figure), Massey carefully and confidently lays the cultural and psychosocial bricks of Evolutionism. British author GERALD MASSEY (1828-1907) published works of poetry, spiritualism, Shakespearean criticism, and theology, but his best-known works are in the realm of Egyptology, including A Book of the Beginnings and Ancient Egypt: The Light of the World.
