Détails: This is the first overall account of the reception accorded to French novels in 18th century Germany. As such, it casts new light on a little-known aspect of comparative literary history. The main focus is on licentious novels, as these play a dominant role in the French novel prior to 1800. In Germany they were soon considered to be paradigmatic for French literature in general. Not only significant novelists like Crébillon fils and Laclos but also light fiction of this nature were the subject of controversy, and many of them were translated. They also had an influence on the German Originalroman. The volume rounds off with an annotated bibliography of the German translations.

Détails: The Symbolist Movement in Literature is a highly influential work of criticism and served to introduce the French Symbolists to an Anglophone readership. This work had a formative influence on modernist writers such as Joyce, Eliot, Pound and Yeats, helping to shape the role of the Image in modernist writing. Without symbolism there can be no literature; indeed, not even language. Symbolism in literature really is a form of expression, at the best but approximate, essentially but arbitrary, until it has obtained the force of a convention, for an unseen reality apprehended by the consciousness.

Détails: Ideas of Good and Evil (1903) is a collection of wide-ranging essays by Irish poet W.B. Yeats. Writing on such subjects as the art of poetry, politics, and the occult, Yeats proves himself to be not only a master of verse and drama, but an immensely talented essayist and thorough scholar. “What is ‘Popular Poetry’?” reflects on a changing Irish literary landscape which has, over the course of Yeats’ career, established its own place in world literature apart from, and perhaps surpassing, its English counterpart. Juxtaposing “the poetry of the coteries, which presupposes the written tradition” and “the true poetry of the people, which presupposes the unwritten tradition,” Yeats argues that the spirit of Irish poetry depends on its unfaltering connection to the itinerant bards and storytellers whose gift for musicality and memory kept language alive for a widely illiterate people. In “Magic,” Yeats, a longtime member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, discusses his belief in the occult. Musing on the power of symbol to evoke memories, as well as the revelation of his past lives, Yeats provides personal anecdotes and secondhand accounts of magical occurrences and experiences, exposing a world secrets and hidden meaning for believers and the uninitiated alike. “The Philosophy of Shelley’s Poetry” is an academic essay in which Yeats argues that Shelley’s poems far surpass the radical ideologies of such figures as William Godwin. Ideas of Good and Evil showcases the diverse intellectual and spiritual interests of W.B. Yeats, an icon of Irish literature and one of the twentieth century’s leading poetic voices. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of W.B. Yeats’s Ideas of Good and Evil is a classic of Irish literature reimagined for modern readers.

Détails: This extraordinarily wide-ranging study looks at the dilemmas of life today and shows how they need not have arisen. Portraits of living people and historical figures are placed alongside each other as Zeldin discusses how men and women have lost and regained hope; how they have learnt to have interesting conversations; how some have acquired an immunity to loneliness; how new forms of love and desire have been invented; how respect has become more valued than power; how the art of escaping from one's troubles has developed; why even the privileged are often gloomy; and why parents and children are changing their minds about what they want from each other.

Détails: "Calvary" ("Le Calvaire") is a 1886 novel by the French journalist, playwright, and novelist Octave Mirbeau. Heavily drawing from his own life, Mirbeau's "Calvary" is a romanticised retelling of his fateful affair with a woman of questionable morals named Judith Vinmer - "Juliette Roux" in the novel. Octave Mirbeau (1848 - 1917) was a French playwright, travel writer, journalist, pamphleteer, art critic, and novelist whose work has been translated into thirty languages. Mirbeau became famous in Europe and enjoyed immense popularity, while simultaneously remaining appealing to the literary and artistic avant-garde. Other notable works by this author include: "Sébastien Roch" (1890), "Dans le ciel" (1893-1989), and "Le Jardin des supplices" (1899). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in a modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new introduction on the history of erotic literature.

Détails: In a poststructuralist study of thirteenth-century French historical texts, Gabrielle Spiegel investigates the reasons for the rise of French vernacular prose historiography at this particular time. She argues that the vernacular prose histories that have until now been regarded as royalist were actually products of the aristocracy, reflecting its anxiety as it faced social and economic change and political threats from the monarchy.
