Détails: This book is a collection of stories about the real secret life of several autism mothers, detailing their stress, their joys, their tears, their laughter, and their disappointments. They describe the struggles they have faced in battling the schools, the state, the media, public opinion, and the medical community that believes autism is a psychological condition rather than a treatable medical disorder. Most importantly, this book reveals the truth behind the causes of autism and offers accounts of real recoveries from a disease that is supposed to be a lifelong disability. These heart-rending and, ultimately, inspirational accounts offer support, practical advice, and spiritual strength to families dealing with autism. They remind the readers that no matter how hopeless their struggle may seem, recovery is within reach.

As I grew up, it did not get better but worse. Looking for love in all the wrong places only led me in a deep dark hole of chronic depression among other things, but I know this too shall pass. I have learned to walk in the rain, but instead of being a dark and gloomy place, it became my beautiful rain for it was there where I learned to depend on my heavenly Father and his son; it was there that I found my loyal best friend.

Détails: Through grief, tragedy, divorce, sickness, aging, death, and other storms of life, God shows up. But we must be open to his holy presence; we must know that he is a rewarder to those who diligently seek him. “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him” (Hebrews 11:6). A book composed of short stories, prayers, journal entries, and scriptures, To Them Who Love the Lord, is inspiring and reminding of God’s love, goodness, mercy, and grace. It reminds us, as humans, that when we have no strength, God is our strength. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble” (Psalm 46:1).

Détails: Every cancer patient wants hope. They need hope. But in order to have hope, one needs to know what hope is. It’s not a vague, barely grasp-able concept. Hope is real, and it starts with knowing Someone cares. Hope is facing each day with Purpose. Hope is in essence rock-solid Faith. Hope and Help is a man’s story of his battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and a central nervous system attack called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy/JC virus. In the middle of this, doctors discovered his granddaughter had a brain tumor. But what should have killed him only made him stronger and more determined to fulfil his God-given purpose in life. What is notable about this man’s story is that while each day was faced with daunting challenges, he met each challenge with faith and strength that clearly came from God. As a result, he and the doctors saw miracles happen before their eyes. Other patients who met him were forever impacted by his testimony. Today, through this book and a ministry called Hope and Help, what this one man learned is more than an encouragement to others – it’s showing them how they can have a similar story themselves.

Détails: How can women live fully? If autonomy is critical for humans, why do women have little or no choice vis-à-vis motherhood? Do women know they have a choice, if they do? How 'free' are these choices in a context where the self is socially mired and deeply enmeshed into the familial? What are implications of motherhood on how human relatedness and belonging are defined? These questions underlie Amrita Nandy's remarkable research on motherhood as an institution, one that conflates 'woman' with 'mother' and 'personal' with 'political'. As the bedrock of human survival and an unchallenged norm of 'normal' female lives, motherhood expects and even compels women to be mothers—symbolic and corporeal. Even though the ideology of pronatalism and motherhood reinforce reproductive technology and vice versa, the care work of mothering suffers political neglect and economic devaluation. However, motherhood (and non-motherhood) is not just physiological. As the pivot to a web of heteronormative institutions (such as marriage and the family), motherhood bears an overwhelming and decisive influence on women's lives. Against the weight of traditional and contemporary histories, socio-political discourse and policies, this study explores how women, as embodiments of multiple identities, could live stigma-free, 'authentic' lives without having to abandon reproductive 'self'-determination. Published by Zubaan.

Détails: The Victorian fascination with fairyland is reflected in the literature of the period, which includes some of the most imaginative fairy tales ever written. They offer the shortest path to the age's dreams, desires, and wishes. Authors central to the nineteenth-century canon such as Thackeray, Oscar Wilde, Ford Madox Ford, and Rudyard Kipling wrote fairy tales, and authors primarily famous for their work in the genre include George MacDonald, Juliana Ewing, Mary De Morgan, and Andrew Lang. This anthology brings together fourteen of the best stories, by these and other outstanding practitioners, to show the vibrancy and variety of the form and its ability to reflect our deepest concerns. The stories in this selection range from pure whimsy and romance to witty satire and darker, uncanny mystery. Paradox proves central to a form offered equally to children and adults. Fairyland is a dynamic and beguiling place, one that permits the most striking explorations of gender, suffering, love, family, and the travails of identity. Michael Newton's introduction and notes explore the literary marketplace in which these tales appeared, as well as the role they played in contemporary debates on scepticism and belief. The book also includes a selection of original illustrations by some of the masters of the field such as Richard Doyle, Arthur Hughes, and Walter Crane.

Détails: Food is fundamental to health and social participation, yet food poverty has increased in the global North. Adopting a realist ontology and taking a comparative case approach, Families and Food in Hard Times addresses the global problem of economic retrenchment and how those most affected are those with the least resources. Based on research carried out with low-income families with children aged 11-15, this timely book examines food poverty in the UK, Portugal and Norway in the decade following the 2008 financial crisis. It examines the resources to which families have access in relation to public policies, local institutions and kinship and friendship networks, and how they intersect. Through ‘thick description’ of families’ everyday lives, it explores the ways in which low income impacts upon practices of household food provisioning, the types of formal and informal support on which families draw to get by, the provision and role of school meals in children’s lives, and the constraints upon families’ social participation involving food. Providing extensive and intensive knowledge concerning the conditions and experiences of low-income parents as they endeavour to feed their families, as well as children’s perspectives of food and eating in the context of low income, the book also draws on the European social science literature on food and families to shed light on the causes and consequences of food poverty in austerity Europe.

Détails: This book is titled Hidden Relationships of the Homicide Detective. The responsibility of overseeing the Homicide Unit and my everyday exposure to witnessing violent crimes throughout the city of Birmingham led me to write this fiction novel that depicts a young man who takes a circuitous route in his quest to restore the luster in his parents’ dismal marriage. While in pursuit of what he believes is the key to restoring happiness in his family, Trey Wilcox meets some interesting people who at one time or another crossed paths with his dad, along with other amazing discoveries. But more than anything else, this long and winding voyage reinforces his belief that family and lifelong relationships are vitally important for survival. This book is designed to help restore family values, to encourage friendly relationships, and to truncate the rise in the number of dysfunctional families across the globe. It is also designed to uplift victims of violent crimes who might still be in despair because of the unwarranted trauma they have experienced. It will also help them understand that irrespective of the odds that they currently face, they can pick up the fragments of their broken lives and rise far above that experience. This is a must read for adults of all ages. But with the vast majority of youths in the world maturing as quickly as they do, I envision upper-class high school age as a starting point for marketing this book. This is definitely a must read for high school seniors as they prepare to enter college and adulthood in a world filled with an assortment of surprises, traps, and vices designed to trip them up. It serves as an eye-opener for all of us, irrespective of whether we, or any of our family members, have ever been the victim of a violent crime. As a matter of fact, the content in this book is written in such a manner that it serves as a great read for every family and ideal for public libraries. Throughout this book, we are reminded just how fragile life and relationships are, as many of us take for granted on a daily basis that one incident is all that separates us from an enormous setback, irrespective of our current walk of life.
