Détails: Legendary creators Warren Ellis, Darko Macan, John Higgins, Tim Bradstreet, Marcelo Frusin and Gary Erskine tear at the scabs covering humanity’s self-inflicted wounds in JOHN CONSTANTINE, HELLBLAZER VOL. 13: HAUNTED. John Constantine may not be the nicest man you’ll ever meet, but there’s plenty who are worse-and now that he’s back in eternal, ever-changing London, he’s about to discover some prime examples of the species. After spending a lifetime knee-deep in the necromancy trenches, Constantine has seen every shade of self-aggrandizement that the predators of the world have to offer, making it all too easy for him to track them down and corner them in their squalid little lairs. Because the ugly truth is, no matter how many pseudo-mystical rationalizations the tossers spout, they can’t disguise the soul-crushing banality of their evil. To defeat them, all he has to do is peel away their delusions and hold up a mirror. After all, no one knows the torment of true self-knowledge better than John Constantine. Collects #134-145 of the signature Vertigo series together with the controversial “Shoot” one-shot from VERTIGO RESURRECTED and three never-before-reprinted seasonal tales from VERTIGO: WINTER’S EDGE.

Détails: '...this is a book with an interesting thesis, and a welcome contribution to the literature. Pile has opened up a productive theoretical and empirical space for further study and exploration' - RGS-IBG Urban Geography Research Group What is real about city life? Real Cities shows why it is necessary to take seriously the more imaginary, fantastic and emotional aspects of city life. Drawing inspiration from the work of Walter Benjamin, Sigmund Freud and Georg Simmel, Pile explores the dream-like and ghost-like experiences of the city. Such experiences are, he argues, best described as phantasmagorias. The phantasmagorias of city life, though commonplace, are far from self-evident and little understood. This book is a path-breaking exploration of urban phantasmagorias, grounded empirically in a series of unusual and exciting case studies. In this study, four substantial phantasmagorias are identified: dreams, magic, vampires and ghosts. The investigation of each phantasmagoria is developed using a wide variety of clear examples. Thus, voodoo in New York and New Orleans shows how ideas about magic are forged within cities. Meanwhile vampires reveal how specific fears about sex and death are expressed within, and circulate between, cities such as London and Singapore. Taken together, such examples build a unique picture of the diverse roles of the imaginary, fantastic and the emotional in modern city life. What is "real" about the city has radical consequences for how we think about improving city life, for all too often these are over-looked in utopian schemes for the city. Real Cities forcefully argues that an appreciation of urban phantasmagorias must be central to what is considered real about city life.

Détails: Ian Rankin is considered by many to be Scotland's greatest living crime fiction author. Most well known for his Inspector Rebus series--which has earned critical acclaim as well as scores of fans worldwide--Rankin is a prolific author whose other works include spy thrillers, nonfiction books and articles, short stories, novels, graphic novels, audio recordings, television/film, and plays. This companion--the first to provide a complete look at all of his writings--includes alphabetized entries on Rankin's works, characters, and themes; a biography; a chronology; maps of Rebus' Edinburgh; and an annotated bibliography. A champion of both Edinburgh and Scotland, Rankin continues to combine engaging entertainment with socio-political commentary showing Edinburgh as a microcosm of Scotland, and Scotland as a microcosm of the world. His writing investigates questions of Scottish identity, British history, masculinity, and contemporary culture while providing mystery readers with complex, suspenseful plots, realistic character development, and a unique mix of American hard-boiled and procedural styles with Scottish dialects and sensibilities.

Détails: John Constantine knows the secrets of his native England like the back of his nicotine-stained hand. Unfortunately for him, he’s now a world away from that green and pleasant land. Constantine has returned to America, and this time he’s landed in the worst place imaginable: a cell in a maximum-security prison, with a 35-year sentence for murder. Adapting to his new environs will require a steep learning curve, but the world’s greatest magician is nothing if not flexible. In fact, the question that his fellow inmates should be asking is not how this strange-talking newcomer will endure being locked up with society’s worst offenders, but rather how they are going to survive the experience. That’s because Constantine has a few more stops to make on his stateside tour, and, unlike his cellmates, his journey begins in the joint rather than ending there. But when he arrives in the rural town of Doglick, West Virginia, to make personal amends for his crime, what he finds going on behind its closed doors shocks the famously world-weary sorcerer to his hardened, cynical core. Acclaimed writer Brian Azzarello is joined by legendary artists Richard Corben, Marcelo Frusin and Steve Dillon for a terrifying expedition into the darkest corners of the Land of the Free in JOHN CONSTANTINE, HELLBLAZER VOL. 14: GOOD INTENTIONS, collecting issues 146-161 of the signature VERTIGO series together with the nostalgic tale “The First Time” from VERTIGO SECRET FILES: HELLBLAZER.

Détails: A new adventure starring Vertigo's longest running antihero, John Constantine, England's chain-smoking, low-rent magus, featuring artwork by Sean Murphy, illustrator of JOE THE BARBARIAN. When John Constantine is run over by a truck, it takes a little while for England's nicotine-fueled magus to realize that he's perched between life and death. After a few weeks of hospital rehab, Constantine finds the London streets very different from when he left them behind as a series of occult murders and mutilations demands his attention. The common denominator points back to the ER where Constantine was admitted.

Détails: Jump into the opening chapter of this wickedly funny and racy modern reintroduction of John Constantine! The dead can’t die again—even within the supernatural circles that surround John Constantine, some things are impossible. But when the ghosts that haunt the occult detective start being murdered, it becomes clear the rules have changed. Far worse than ordinary death, this second death means oblivion—no afterlife, no way back. To stop it, Constantine must explore the barriers between the mundane and the extraordinary: the thin places. The investigation takes the Hellblazer from New York City back home to London, where he joins up with an old rival, now an exorcist in Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Their dark, tangled history together is filled with music and magic, failed friendships and disastrous romance. But even if Constantine somehow survives the supernatural serial killer, the price involved could leave whatever’s left of his soul beaten and broken. CONSTANTINE: THE HELLBLAZER: GOING DOWN collects the first six issues of the groundbreaking series by celebrated writers Ming Doyle (THE KITCHEN) and James Tynion IV (BATMAN ETERNAL) and acclaimed artists Riley Rossmo (Proof) and Vanessa Del Rey (Hit).
