Détails: This is a story of a first generation son of immigrant parents who came to America after the turn-of-the-century in the early 1900s. It traces the life of a boy who never lost sight of who he was or what was expected of him. His formative years were spent during the great depression in an area that had little to offer but where much was expected even when the going proved difficult. It is a story that disguises pathos as humor even though the humor is genuine. It portrays a life fraught with difficulty but where each difficulty is overcome by sheer force of willpower. The writer displays affection for his mother by portraying a person of such great strength and character that one must imagine a giant only to find a thin aging woman barely five feet tall. Each segment of the story has its own unique appeal. One episode dealing with the writers description of life at a CCC camp is especially compelling. It deals with Polish/American boys interacting with the Catholic Church three thousand miles from home and is sure to bring a tear to the eye of even the hardest heart. Although the entire piece is essentially esoteric it has meaning and purpose to anyone who survived that era. . . . Reviewed by Tom Topolski

Détails: Gyo Fujikawa's iconic children's books are beloved all over the world. Now it's time for Gyo's story to be told -- a story of artistic talent that refused to be constrained by rules or expectations. Growing up quiet and lonely at the beginning of the twentieth century, Gyo learned from her relatives the ways in which both women and Japanese people lacked opportunity. Her teachers and family believed in her and sent her to art school and later Japan, where her talent flourished. But while Gyo's career grew and led her to work for Walt Disney Studios, World War II began, and with it, her family's internment. But Gyo never stopped fighting -- for herself, her vision, her family and her readers -- and later wrote and illustrated the first children's book to feature children of different races interacting together. This luminous new book beautifully and openly touches on Gyo's difficult experiences and growth. Through Julie Morstad's exquisite illustrations, alternating between striking black-and-white linework and lush colour, and Kyo Maclear's artful and accessible writing, the story of this cherished figure is told at last.

Détails: "The story begins with my father, actually, and the fact that I'm the one who's answerable for his death. It was not my first crime, as you will see, but it is the one my mother couldn't forgive." In her astonishing New York Times bestseller, acclaimed author Elizabeth George reveals the even darker truth behind this startling confession. Playing for the Ashes is a rich tale of passion, murder and love in which Inspector Thomas Lynley and Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers once again find themselves embroiled in a case where nothing--and no one--is really what it seems. Intense, suspenseful and brilliantly written, Playing for the Ashes will make readers "search out the sleuthing pair's first six adventures...a treasure," as Cosmopolitan predicted in their review.

Détails: Scattering Ashes is a resource for Christian families confronting the reality of their loved one's gay lifestyle. Joyce Smith Helyer takes the reader on a journey that changed her life when her brother began their midnight Christmas Eve conversation with these words, "Joyce, I have something to tell you." As I waited expectantly for what he was going to say next, he paused, but then shifted the conversation. He tried again, but the same thing happened. I felt like he was trying to land an airplane in trouble and kept circling the airport looking for the best approach. His attempted landings kept falling short of the runway. A vague sense of uneasiness began to fill my mind . . . Little did I realize that my nice, "typical" Christian experience would be undergoing a significant change . . . Fear I could barely articulate almost overwhelmed me . . . Finally, I looked at my handsome, 26-year-old brother and knew the words he was having so much difficulty saying. "Ron, are you trying to tell me you're gay?" His quiet response echoed across the living room. "I thought you had it figured out."

Détails: In many ways, life for Allen Brady began on a 1954 afternoon when his childhood home in Hope Hull, Alabama erupted in flames and burned to the ground. He was four years old. The family home was rebuilt and given the address of 391. In 1974, he experienced another rebirth while in the military in Okinawa—that was the year he married Yoko. Her address included 391, which was eerily similar to his own. In this memoir, Brady recalls the series of events that brought him from Alabama to a faraway island where the course of his life was set. He begins with memories of a small farm existence complete with a mule and wagon (no car and no television). While white, he was taught by his parents to respect everyone no matter the color of their skin in this racially segregated state. Join the author as he looks back at his life’s unexpected turns, his involvement in Vietnam as part of the Army Security Agency, and what it meant to be a “research operator” working under a cloak of secrecy.

Détails: On the eve of Pearl Harbor, Howard Hughes hires Hollywood gumshoe Toby Peters to find stolen blueprints in the “marvelously entertaining” series (Newsday). Millionaire Howard Hughes likes his secrets. He likes to keep them—and he definitely doesn’t like having them stolen. Hollywood PI Toby Peters has a rep for being discreet. So when the film tycoon and aviation magnate needs a detective to very privately investigate the theft of top-secret blueprints taken from his home during one of his fabulous parties, he summons Peters. But what starts as counter-espionage intrigue turns into a triple murder, and Peters soon finds himself bait for a killer. As America is pulled into World War II, Peters is just trying to stay alive as a gunman chases him through a deserted television soundstage. With help from some unlikely allies—including Basil Rathbone, the silver screen’s Sherlock Holmes, and gangster/patriot Bugsy Siegel—Peters is determined to dodge the bullets long enough to recover the blueprints before they fall into the wrong hands. The Chicago Sun-Times calls the Toby Peters mysteries “entertainment at its best” as Edgar Award–winning author Stuart Kaminsky takes readers on a rollicking tour of Hollywood in the forties.

Détails: For hundreds of years, Poland served as the epicenter of Jewish life. As a result of the Holocaust, though, Poland has become a "Jewish Atlantis." Yet, the majority of Jews in the world today have their genealogical roots in the historical lands of Poland. In this book, Sherwin demonstrates how the unprecedented works of intellect and spirit produced during the Jewish "Golden Age" in Poland can provide contemporary Jews with the spiritual and intellectual resources required to ensure Jewish continuity in the present and future. Sherwin introduces us to the vast range of mystical speculation, evocative stories, talmudic dialectics, theological ideas, and social realities that were muted by the destruction of Polish Jewry during the Holocaust. Sherwin critiques the tendency among contemporary Jews to disregard the precious legacy bequeathed by Polish Jewry, and presents a plan for re-creating Jewish life after the Holocaust that draws from the wisdom of the spiritual magnates and from the communal experience that characterized Jewish life in Poland. Sherwin concludes with a controversial proposal for the future of Polish-Jewish relations.

Détails: A generation past, the western realms were embroiled in endless war. Then the Destroyer came. From the blood and ashes he left behind, a tenuous alliance rose between the barbarian riders of Parsathe and the walled kingdoms of the south. That alliance is all that stands against the return of an ancient evil—until the barbarian king and queen are slain in an act of bloody betrayal. Though forbidden by the alliance council to kill the corrupt king responsible for his parents’ murders, Maddek vows to avenge them, even if it costs him the Parsathean crown. But when he learns it was the king’s daughter who lured his parents to their deaths, the barbarian warrior is determined to make her pay. Yet the woman Maddek captures is not what he expected. Though the last in a line of legendary warrior-queens, Yvenne is small and weak, and the sharpest weapons she wields are her mind and her tongue. Even more surprising is the marriage she proposes to unite them in their goals and to claim their thrones—because her desire for vengeance against her father burns even hotter than his own…

Détails: The Wisden on the Ashes: The authoritative story of cricket's greatest rivalry is a detailed chronological journey through the history of this famous English-Australian contest. With Test reports, scorecards, "Great bowlers of the year" and other fascinating material from the archives, together with new editorial pieces, this is a remarkable record of cricket's most enduring battle. The book begins its journey with England's first tour of Australia in 1876 and the subsequent three series prior to the 1882 tour that led to a mock obituary being placed in the Sporting Times "In affectionate remembrance of English cricket, which died at The Oval on 29th August, 1882. ... The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia." Celebrating the players who made their mark on the game and the controversies that shook the sport, the book covers every series since then through to the most recent series. In 2005 England won a highly competitive series that helped raise the popularity of the sport, and each series since then has attracted huge attention. Beautifully produced, this book will be a welcome addition to all cricket enthusiasts' collections, as well as an ideal gift purchase. This updated edition includes the 2009 series, which saw England regain the Ashes on home soil after the disappointment of the 2005-06 series, and the fantastic, recent 2010-11 series held in Australia. It also includes a colour photo section celebrating the players, the matches and the key moments from an ongoing rivalry.

Détails: Voted one of the Best Mystery Books of 2008 by Publisher's Weekly This dazzling crime-fiction debut — a dark, haunting, compassionate story of the hunt for a killer motivated by love — will be the international publishing event of the season. This brilliant debut mystery has it all: characters so realistic they rise off the page; a devious plot that delivers both psychological depth and emotional heights; exceptionally fine, deft writing; a stunning cross-Canada manhunt; a detective like no other; and the promise of more mysteries in the series. The first homicide that Detective Inspector Hazel Micallef, acting chief of the Port Dundas police, has had to investigate in almost three years is that of cancer patient Delia Chandler, a woman who once had an affair with Hazel’s father. When a few days later, and three hundred kilometres away, the mutilated body of an MS sufferer is found, painted in Chandler’s blood, Micallef realizes that someone is killing the terminally ill, and not for mercy’s sake. Hobbled by a bad back and a skeptical police bureaucracy, Inspector Micallef takes it upon herself to coordinate a nationwide manhunt for the killer; a man, she soon learns, who can save a life as dramatically as he can end one — a man with God on his mind, grief in his heart, and a desperate need to kill. This thrilling psychological tale stands alongside the best contributions to the genre by Barbara Vine (aka Ruth Rendell), Minette Walters, and Patricia Highsmith. The Calling is being published simultaneously in the U.S. by Harcourt and in the U.K. by Transworld.
