Détails: This book highlights mathematical research interests that appear in real life, such as the study and modeling of random and deterministic phenomena. As such, it provides current research in mathematics, with applications in biological and environmental sciences, ecology, epidemiology and social perspectives. The chapters can be read independently of each other, with dedicated references specific to each chapter. The book is organized in two main parts. The first is devoted to some advanced mathematical problems regarding epidemic models; predictions of biomass; space-time modeling of extreme rainfall; modeling with the piecewise deterministic Markov process; optimal control problems; evolution equations in a periodic environment; and the analysis of the heat equation. The second is devoted to a modelization with interdisciplinarity in ecological, socio-economic, epistemological, demographic and social problems. Mathematical Modeling of Random and Deterministic Phenomena is aimed at expert readers, young researchers, plus graduate and advanced undergraduate students who are interested in probability, statistics, modeling and mathematical analysis.

Détails: Environmental Metabolomics Applications in Field and Laboratory Studies: From the Exposome to the Metabolome presents an overview of the current state of aquatic environments and problems caused by human pressure and daily life. The presence of contaminants in nature and their effects are evaluated, along with recommendations for preservation. This book not only shows readers how to implement techniques, it also guides them through the process. As metabolomics becomes a more routine technique for environmental studies and future perspectives, a guide for validation and globalization of current approaches is needed. Presents relevant and reliable information on the use of different analytical techniques for establishing the environmental metabolomics of polluted systems Includes a critical review of each central topic in every chapter, together with a bibliography and future trends Provides, for the first time, a global opinion and guide for achieving standardized results

Détails: This two-volume book provides a comprehensive, detailed understanding of paleoclimatology beginning by describing the “proxy data” from which quantitative climate parameters are reconstructed and finally by developing a comprehensive Earth system model able to simulate past climates of the Earth. It compiles contributions from specialists in each field who each have an in-depth knowledge of their particular area of expertise. The first volume is devoted to “Finding, dating and interpreting the evidence”. It describes the different geo-chronological technical methods used in paleoclimatology. Different fields of geosciences such as: stratigraphy, magnetism, dendrochronology, sedimentology, are drawn from and proxy reconstructions from ice sheets, terrestrial (speleothems, lakes, and vegetation) and oceanic data, are used to reconstruct the ancient climates of the Earth. The second volume, entitled “Investigation into ancient climates,” focuses on building comprehensive models of past climate evolution. The chapters are based on understanding the processes driving the evolution of each component of the Earth system (atmosphere, ocean, ice). This volume provides both an analytical understanding of each component using a hierarchy of models (from conceptual to very sophisticated 3D general circulation models) and a synthetic approach incorporating all of these components to explore the evolution of the Earth as a global system. As a whole this book provides the reader with a complete view of data reconstruction and modeling of the climate of the Earth from deep time to present day with even an excursion to include impacts on future climate.

Détails: This book describes and analyses the diversity of possible approaches and policy pathways to implement sustainable groundwater development, based on a comparative analysis of numerous quantitative management case studies from France and Australia. This unique book brings together water professionals and academics involved for several decades in groundwater policy making, planning or operational management to reflect on their experience with developing and implementing groundwater management policy. The data and analysis presented accordingly makes a significant contribution to the empirical water management literature by providing novel, real world insights unpublished elsewhere. The originality of the contributions also lies in the different disciplinary perspectives (hydrogeology, economics, planning and social sciences in particular) adopted in many chapters. The book offers a unique comparative analysis of France, Australia and experiences in countries such as Chile and the US to identify similarities, but also fundamental differences, which are analysed and presented as alternative policy options – these differences being mainly related to the role of the state, the community and market mechanisms in groundwater management.

Détails: This book constitutes the proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Research Challenges in Information Sciences, RCIS 2021, which was planned to take place in Limassol, Cyprus, but had to change to an online event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference took place virtually during May 11-14, 2021. It focused on the special theme "Information Science and Global Crisis". The scope of RCIS is summarized by the thematic areas of information systems and their engineering; user-oriented approaches; data and information management; business process management; domain-specific information systems engineering; data science; information infrastructures, and reflective research and practice. The 29 full papers and 6 work-in-progress papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 99 submissions. They were organized in topical sections named: Business and Industrial Processes, Information Security and Risk Management, Data and Information Management, Domain-specific Information Systems Engineering, User-Centered Approaches, Data Science and Decision Support, and Information Systems and Their Engineering. The volume also contains 13 poster and demo papers, and 4 doctoral consortium papers. In addition, two-page summaries of tutorials and research project papers can be found in the back matter.

Détails: This book provides a comprehensive overview of the current knowledge on the fate and interaction of pharmaceuticals in soil-crop systems. It addresses the principles of their transport, uptake and metabolism and reviews methodologies for their analytical determination. It also discusses ecotoxicological effects arising from their presence and highlights bioremediation approaches for their removal. The use of treated wastewater to irrigate crops is becoming more widespread in regions where freshwater is limited. This practice conserves freshwater resources and contributes to nutrient recycling. However, concerns remain regarding the safety of irrigation with treated wastewater since it contains residues of pharmaceuticals that have survived treatment, which means that soil and fauna are potentially exposed to these xenobiotics. Various pathways govern the fate of pharmaceuticals in crop-soil systems, including soil degradation; formation of non-extractable residues; uptake by soil-dwelling organisms (e.g. earthworms); and uptake, transport, and metabolism in agricultural crops. Investigations into these aspects have only recently been initiated, and there is still a long way to go before a meaningful assessment of the impact of wastewater has been completed.

Détails: "The Parenticide Club" features four short-stories about a family murder, as seen from the eye of its most innocent member, who just might be the murderer himself. Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914) was an American writer, journalist, critic, poet, and Civil War veteran, best known for The Devil's Dictionary (1911). He dominated the horror genre as the preeminent innovator of supernatural storytelling in the period between the death of Edgar Allan Poe and the rise of H.P. Lovecraft. Bierce’s death was as mysterious as his strange stories; sometime around 1914 he left for Mexico, wanting to experience the Mexican Revolution firsthand, and was never to be seen again.
