Détails: The popular psychoanalyst examines the continuing tension in our lives between the possibilities that freedom offers and the various limitations imposed upon us by our particular fate or destiny. "May is an existential analyst who deservedly enjoys a reputation among both general and critical readers as an accessible and insightful social and psychological theorist. . . . Freedom's characteristics, fruits, and problems; destiny's reality; death; and therapy's place in the confrontation between freedom and destiny are examined. . . . Poets, social critics, artists, and other thinkers are invoked appropriately to support May's theory of freedom and destiny's interdependence."—Library Journal "Especially instructive, even stunning, is Dr. May's willingness to respect mystery. . . .There is, too, at work throughout the book a disciplined yet relaxed clinical mind, inclined to celebrate . . . what Flannery O'Connor called 'mystery and manners,' and to do so in a tactful, meditative manner."—Robert Coles, America

Détails: No president looms larger in twentieth-century American history than Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and few life stories can match his for sheer drama. He was a man of large personality and a president of vast and enduring accomplishments. Yet, as the distinguished historian Alonzo Hamby argues, FDR’s record as president was more mixed than we are often led to believe. Roosevelt was a great politician and war leader, but the New Deal, his most famous legacy, failed to achieve its goal of reviving the nation’s economy, in no small measure because of FDR’s hostility toward the business and financial communities. Hamby is no less perceptive about FDR’s private life. Drawing on overlooked sources, he documents the president’s final months in intimate detail, claiming that his perseverance despite his serious illness must be counted as one of the twentieth century’s great feats of endurance. Man of Destiny is a measured account of the life, both personal and public, of the most important American leader of the twentieth century.

Détails: This volume brings together a range of critical studies that explore diverse ways in which processes of globalization pose new challenges and offer new opportunities for religious groups to propagate their beliefs in contemporary Asian contexts. Proselytizing tests the limits of religious pluralism, as it is a practice that exists on the border of tolerance and intolerance. The practice of proselytizing presupposes not only that people are freely-choosing agents and that religion itself is an issue of individual preference. At the same time, however, it also raises fraught questions about belonging to particular communities and heightens the moral stakes in involved in such choices. In many contemporary Asian societies, questions about the limits of acceptable proselytic behavior have taken on added urgency in the current era of globalization. Recognizing this, the studies brought together here serve to develop our understandings of current developments as it critically explores the complex ways in which contemporary contexts of religious pluralism in Asia both enable, and are threatened by, projects of proselytization.

Détails: There is, and always has been, a widespread belief in Fate, or Destiny, that is, in an eternal and inscrutable Power which apportions definite ends to both individuals and nations. But, contradictory as it may appear, there is an equally widespread belief in man's responsibility as a free agent. This dual experience of fate on the one hand, and freedom on the other, has given rise to the interminable controversy between the believers in Fatalism and the upholders of free will. Man is the doer of his own deeds; as such he is the maker of his own character; and as the doer of his deeds and the maker of his character, he is the molder and shaper of his destiny.

Détails: This is a major survey and assessment of U.S. intelligence activities over the last forty-five years. It offers a systematic and authoritative evaluation of American intelligence-gathering machinery: how it has been used, misused, and on occasion, ignored. The book has been hailed as "a splendid work, reflective and penetrating" by James R. Schlesinger; while Zbigniew Brzezinski describes Laqueur as "a man who understands the relationships between history and the world of secret services." Henry S. Rowen noted that Laqueur "brings a rare degree of analytical power to this important subject."

Détails: A Mirror to Power takes a sharp look across the wide horizon of the past decade, a time when reputations were wrecked on a high-velocity rollercoaster and events became a jamboree instead of a procession. This tumbledown history of corruption, terrorism, justice delayed, rights denied and governance betrayed still left enough gaps for celebration of laughter in areas outside politics. The cast is extraordinary: from the founding fathers of our partitioned subcontinent to those shaping its future today. This book is especially distinctive because of M.J. Akbar's unerring eye for underlying causes and potential consequences that bookend current events and a prose style that conveys serious thought in lucid sentences and succinct paragraphs. The pieces are on subjects as diverse as politics, cricket, cinema stars, the lost art of reading and the joys of trash, besides long, elegant essays on the history of a community seen through the genius of its poets and the trial of Bahadur Shah Zafar. This is an indispensable introduction to what promises to be an Indian century.

Détails: Why do we attract the same types of people over and over again? Why is it so easy for certain people to find love, and so difficult for others? The Four Pillars of Destiny: A Guide to Relationships answers the age-old questions surrounding relationships, attractions, and true love. By referencing the year, month, day, and hour of a person’s birth, the ancient Chinese method of Four Pillars will systematically map the blueprint for his or her life in matters of health, wealth, career, love, and happiness. For countless generations, the Chinese have been drawn to the Four Pillars system for its accurate method of divination. This system has allowed practitioners the ability to analyze many aspects of a person’s life and enlightened the path to capitalizing their cosmic flow when good luck happens. The destiny blueprint each of us receives at birth can be used to reveal options and paths that we can act upon during good and bad times in life. Using this blueprint, we can evaluate where our limits lie and understand what we truly are capable of achieving, as well as the type of connections that we can make with those around us.

Détails: "I absolutely loved this book. I never wanted this journey to end!" says Morgan Matson, New York Times bestselling author of The Unexpected Everything, of this fun and irresistible contemporary YA about high school romance & mischief on the high seas. With her trusty baton and six insanely organized clipboards, drum major Liza Sanders is about to take Destiny by storm—the boat, that is. When Liza discovered that her beloved band was losing funding, she found Destiny, a luxury cruise ship complete with pools, midnight chocolate buffets, and a $25,000 spring break talent show prize. Liza can’t imagine senior year without the band, and nothing will distract her from achieving victory. She’s therefore not interested when her old camp crush, Lenny, shows up on board, looking shockingly hipster-hot. And she’s especially not interested in Russ, the probably-as-dumb-as-he-is-cute prankster jock whose ex, Demi, happens be Liza’s ex–best friend and leader of the Athenas, a show choir that’s the band’s greatest competition. But it’s not going to be smooth sailing. After the Destiny breaks down, all of Liza’s best-laid plans start to go awry. Liza likes to think of herself as an expert at almost everything, but when it comes to love, she’s about to find herself lost at sea. *** “All aboard for hijinks, crushes, and a sweet story of banding together.” —Emery Lord, author of Open Road Summer "I adored this fun and heartfelt book. It's a pleasure cruise from start to finish, with plenty of waves along the way!" --Leila Howland, author of Nantucket Blue

Détails: From an acclaimed conservative historian and former military officer, a bracing call for a pragmatic confrontation with the nation's problems The Limits of Power identifies a profound triple crisis facing America: the economy, in remarkable disarray, can no longer be fixed by relying on expansion abroad; the government, transformed by an imperial presidency, is a democracy in form only; U.S. involvement in endless wars, driven by a deep infatuation with military power, has been a catastrophe for the body politic. These pressing problems threaten all of us, Republicans and Democrats. If the nation is to solve its predicament, it will need the revival of a distinctly American approach: the neglected tradition of realism. Andrew J. Bacevich, uniquely respected across the political spectrum, offers a historical perspective on the illusions that have governed American policy since 1945. The realism he proposes includes respect for power and its limits; sensitivity to unintended consequences; aversion to claims of exceptionalism; skepticism of easy solutions, especially those involving force; and a conviction that the books will have to balance. Only a return to such principles, Bacevich argues, can provide common ground for fixing America's urgent problems before the damage becomes irreparable.

Détails: The Scottish Enlightenment shaped a new conception of history as a gradual and universal progress from savagery to civil society. Whereas women emancipated themselves from the yoke of male-masters, men in turn acquired polite manners and became civilized. Such a conception, however, presents problematic questions: why were the Americans still savage? Why was it that the Europeans only had completed all the stages of the historic process? Could modern societies escape the destiny of earlier empires and avoid decadence? Was there a limit beyond which women's influence might result in dehumanization? The Scottish Enlightenment's legacy for modernity emerges here as a two-faced Janus, an unresolved tension between universalism and hierarchy, progress and the limits of progress.

Détails: This is an unlikely story of true events. The Day that changed the World in the United States (bombing of the Twin Towers), the Day of Fate in Germany and the Day of Destiny in Israel are all connected with the 11th day of the 9th month. These 9/11 dates entail much more than three events in three countries. In the Hebrew tradition, they include all the calamities that have befallen the Jews from the time of the Destruction of the First Temple and Second Temple, the Expulsion of the Jews from England, France, Spain through to the Holocaust in World War II. These events are, in turn, part of a larger history, which linked the same date with cosmic events such as a day of Cosmic Battle and the Birth of Venus and gave special significance to the numbers 9 and 11. Part one explores this tradition and surveys a range of sources from a former German officer involved in the plot against Hitler, to various conspiracy theories. These events are also related to swastikas and hexagrams. Since World War II there has been a trend to associate swastikas with an evil, German Aryan tradition and hexagrams (e.g. six-pointed Star of David) with a good, Jewish Semitic tradition. Historically, a Jewish connection with the Star of David is late Mediaeval rather than Biblical. Swastikas and hexagrams are found in both the Aryan and the Semitic tradition. Hence, the new trend distorts a complex history. More disturbingly, in the guise of tolerance and political correctness, one version of stories is highlighted, others are being suppressed and truth is endangered.
