Détails: Operetta developed in the second half of the 19th century from the French opéra-comique and the more lighthearted German Singspiel. As the century progressed, the serious concerns of mainstream opera were sustained and intensified, leaving a gap between opéra-comique and vaudeville that necessitated a new type of stage work. Jacques Offenbach, son of a Cologne synagogue cantor, established himself in Paris with his series of opéras-bouffes. The popular success of this individual new form of entertainment light, humorous, satirical and also sentimental led to the emergence of operetta as a separate genre, an art form with its own special flavour and concerns, and no longer simply a "little opera". Attempts to emulate Offenbach's success in France and abroad generated other national schools of operetta and helped to establish the genre internationally, in Spain, in England, and especially in Austria Hungary. Here it inspired works by Franz von Suppé and Johann Strauss II (the Golden Age), and later Franz Lehár and Emmerich Kálmán (the Silver Age). Viennese operetta flourished conterminously with the Habsburg Empire and the mystique of Vienna, but, after the First World War, an artistically vibrant Berlin assumed this leading position (with Paul Lincke, Leon Jessel and Edouard Künnecke). As popular musical tastes diverged more and more during the interwar years, with the advent of new influences—like those of cabaret, the revue, jazz, modern dance music and the cinema, as well as changing social mores—the operetta genre took on new guises. This was especially manifested in the musical comedy of London's West End and New York's Broadway, with their imitators generating a success that opened a new golden age for the reinvented genre, especially after the Second World War. This source book presents an overview of the operetta genre in all its forms. The first volume provides an introduction, a representative chronology of the genre from 1840 to 2013, and a survey of the national schools of France and Austria-Hungary. The principal composers are considered in chronological sequence, with biographical material and a list of stage works, selected synopses and some commentary.

Détails: “Theroux’s work is like no one else’s.” –Francine Prose, New York Times Book Review From legendary writer Paul Theroux comes an atmospheric novel following a big-wave surfer as he confronts aging, privilege, mortality, and whose lives we choose to remember. Now in his sixties, big-wave surfer Joe Sharkey has passed his prime and is losing his “stoke.” The younger surfers around the breaks on the north shore of Oahu still idolize the Shark, but his sponsors are looking elsewhere. One night, while driving home from a bar after one too many, Joe accidentally kills a stranger near Waimea, a tragedy that sends his life out of control. As the repercussions of the accident spiral ever wider, Joe's devoted girlfriend, Olive, throws herself into uncovering the dead man’s identity and helping Joe find vitality and refuge in the waves again. Set in the lush, gritty underside of an island paradise readers rarely see, UNDER THE WAVE AT WAIMEA offers a dramatic, affecting commentary on privilege, mortality, and the lives we choose to remember. It is a masterstroke by one of the greatest writers of our time.

Détails: In this new century mankind faces ever more challenging environmental and publichealthproblems,suchaspollution,invasionbyexoticspecies,theem- gence of new diseases or the emergence of diseases into new regions (West Nile virus,SARS,Anthrax, etc.),andtheresurgenceofexistingdiseases(in?uenza, malaria, TB, HIV/AIDS, etc.). Mathematical models have been successfully used to study many biological, epidemiological and medical problems, and nonlinear and complex dynamics have been observed in all of those contexts. Mathematical studies have helped us not only to better understand these problems but also to ?nd solutions in some cases, such as the prediction and control of SARS outbreaks, understanding HIV infection, and the investi- tion of antibiotic-resistant infections in hospitals. Structuredpopulationmodelsdistinguishindividualsfromoneanother- cording to characteristics such as age, size, location, status, and movement, to determine the birth, growth and death rates, interaction with each other and with environment, infectivity, etc. The goal of structured population models is to understand how these characteristics a?ect the dynamics of these models and thus the outcomes and consequences of the biological and epidemiolo- cal processes. There is a very large and growing body of literature on these topics. This book deals with the recent and important advances in the study of structured population models in biology and epidemiology. There are six chapters in this book, written by leading researchers in these areas.

Détails: In a country long associated with the trade in opiates, the Chinese government has for decades applied extreme measures to curtail the spread of illicit drugs, only to find that the problem has worsened. Burma is blamed as the major producer of illicit drugs and conduit for the entry of drugs into China. Which organizations are behind the heroin trade? What problems and prospects of drug control in the so-called “Golden Triangle” drug-trafficking region are faced by Chinese and Southeast Asian authorities? In The Chinese Heroin Trade, noted criminologists Ko-Lin Chin and Sheldon Zhangexamine the social organization of the trafficking of heroin from the Golden Triangle to China and the wholesale and retail distribution of the drug in China. Based on face-to-face interviews with hundreds of incarcerated drug traffickers, street-level drug dealers, users, and authorities, paired with extensive fieldwork in the border areas of Burma and China and several major urban centers in China and Southeast Asia, this volume reveals how the drug trade has evolved in the Golden Triangle since the late 1980s. Chin and Zhang also explore the marked characteristics of heroin traffickers; the relationship between drug use and sales in China; and how China compares to other international drug markets. The Chinese Heroin Trade is a fascinating, nuanced account of the world of high-risk drug trafficking in a tightly-controlled society.

Détails: Somewhere in one of the countries on the west coast of Africa, a ruthless civil war had broken out. A family of four, a husband and a newly pregnant wife plus two children, unluckily got caught up in the quagmire of this cruel war. In an unexpected turn of events, the warlords and their henchmen ordered the rebels to kill some targeted aliens within their captured territories. The family formed part of those ill-fated aliens. To survive the war, they needed to use all their wits and bravery to outmaneuver the bloodthirsty rebels. For over three years, the family took refuge in dense forests infested with all kinds of wild animals and bloodsucking insects. There was no hospital, no food for the pregnant woman and the family. She had to be delivered in bizarre and difficult circumstances. This author experienced the bitter conflict and saw the beginning and the end of the protracted war. He recounts a true life story of the acts of brutalities, hate, genocides, deceits, and gross human rights abuses that usually characterize wars. Follow the saga of human suffering, adventures, and utter dehumanization that human conflicts can cause, also the sex slavery of adolescent girls, culture of indiscipline and impunity, and the sheer uselessness of modern African wars.

Alors...

Détails: Elizabeth Fahn-Weedor was born in Liberia into a Muslim family, but she later became a Christian. She fled her home country and traveled to the Ivory Coast, where she lived for three and a half years as a refugee due to one of Africa’s bloodiest and brutal civil wars. This civil war led to her toddler daughter coming close to death and being saved, through a miracle, in the killing fields. This experience left Elizabeth holding on tightly for dear life to her faith in God and being granted strength she had never known before. Faith in Christ would bring redemption for Elizabeth and her family as they went through the painful fire of suffering and separation from loved ones who were still stranded in Liberia and as they escaped into a new life filled with many challenges in the United States. Elizabeth later served as a missionary in Ethiopia for four and a half years with her husband Anthony Weedor and their four children. Because she grew up in a culture that did not believe and encourage the education of girls, Elizabeth got her early education through the courageous and financial assistance of her dearest grandmother, who stood fearlessly against a male-dominant society to make education a priority for her granddaughters. Today, Elizabeth is benefiting from her grandmother’s determination to give a girl an education. As a result of her grandmother’s bold stance on impacting women in her culture, Elizabeth is determined to do likewise for girls and women who find themselves in similar traditional practices and worldviews, not forgetting violence against women. Elizabeth continues to serve in missions with her husband, Anthony, who is Africa’s desk director at Advancing Native Missions, based in Afton, Virginia.

Détails: A remarkably simple and yet profoundly deep narrative, this translation is an introduction to the remote world of the 19th-century Altai: a mountainous region of southern Siberia possessing unique flora and fauna and peaks rising to nearly 15,000 feet. Native Altai tribesman Mikhail Chelvalkov vividly describes the physical beauty of the region while chronicling many of the encounters that took place throughout his life as the population transformed from competing nomadic pagan tribes to a settled and harmonious Orthodox Christian culture. One of the first native disciples of the Russian Orthodox missionary priest Makarii Glukharev—who was made a saint in AD 2000—Chelvalkov's testament provides invaluable insights for students of Christian mission, ethnography, geography, and botany.

Détails: This book is about three different types of continuity from historic precedent to current practice in the field of urban planning and particularly that of urban design. The book begins by defining, describing and analyzing the three forms, which are: • Urban conservation, • Cultural tourism, and • Permanencies or Persistencies of Form. The book cites examples of each such case which the author worked on. (However, cases concerning (i) the Middle East and (ii) war, disaster and disintegration, were not included here, because the author’s last two books dwelt specifically upon them.) Amongst others, this book includes designs from the following towns: • Urban conservation: St Petersburg, Russia; Greifswald, Germany; Banska Stiavnica, Slovakia; • Cultural tourism: St Ann’s Bay, Jamaica; • Persistencies of Form: Telford; Thamesmead, London; Tampere, Finland; Silvertown Bridge, London; Herouville Saint Clair, Caen; Tete Defense, Paris. Numerous drawings, prepared by the author (for the greater part), are included in order to illustrate the points made by the text.

Détails: For more than a century, the study of hunting and gathering societies has been central to the development of both archaeology and anthropology as academic disciplines, and has also generated widespread public interest and debate. The Oxford Handbook of the Archaeology and Anthropology of Hunter-Gatherers provides a comprehensive review of hunter-gatherer studies to date, including critical engagements with older debates, new theoretical perspectives, and renewed obligations for greater engagement between researchers and indigenous communities. Chapters provide in-depth archaeological, historical, and anthropological case-studies, and examine far-reaching questions about human social relations, attitudes to technology, ecology, and management of resources and the environment, as well as issues of diet, health, and gender relations - all central topics in hunter-gatherer research, but also themes that have great relevance for modern global society and its future challenges. The Handbook also provides a strategic vision for how the integration of new methods, approaches, and study regions can ensure that future research into the archaeology and anthropology of hunter-gatherers will continue to deliver penetrating insights into the factors that underlie all human diversity.
