Détails: Dexys Midnight Runners were one of the most misunderstood and overlooked groups of the 1980s. At the centre of it all, their front man and originator, Kevin Rowland, had a reputation for maintaining control and domination over Dexys at all costs. In the first comprehensive history of the band, author, Richard White, has conducted in-depth interviews with former members on the experience of being a Midnight Runner. Shedding light on the Dexys legend, including the fractious period of writing and recording the classic Come on Eileen, one of the biggest selling singles in UK history and its parent album Too Rye Ay. While celebrating their achievements on record and on stage, this book also uncovers aspects of Rowland's working methods in the studio and the latest Dexys re-invention, championed on a triumphant tour in 2003.

Détails: “Death is the midnight runner.” – Arab proverb Higgins’ last novel, Edge of Danger, was “hugely entertaining,” said the Los Angeles Times. “The publisher describes it as a powerful thriller, and it’s no lie.” At its end, the murderous Arab/English Rashid family lay decimated – but not extinct. And that may have been Sean Dillon’s fatal error. Her brothers killed one by one, Kate Rashid swears vengeance on all who have harmed her family. Never mind that they tried to assassinate the President of the United States, that villainy ran in their veins. They were her brothers, and her enemies would pay. British agent Sean Dillon…White House operative Blake Johnson…the President himself…their time was coming, and only she knew how – or when. Brilliantly suspenseful, Midnight Runner is further proof that, in the words of the Associated Press, “when it comes to thriller writers, one name stands well above the crowd – Jack Higgins.”

Détails: Jill Gardiner, an ambitious young woman from the 21st century, inexplicably wakes up in 1928 where her first contacts are two young boat builders who at once vie for her attention and affection. Steeling herself to not only survive, but take advantage of her new circumstances, she uses foreknowledge to manipulate the rising stock market into enough capital to allow her friends to build the rumrunner boat of their dreams. With a less than subtle nudge from a local garage owner-cum-bootlegger, they form a partnership that leads to more dangerous encounters than any of the unlikely foursome might dream in their worst nightmares. Running at night in their marvelous creation, the Ghost, they must contend with ferocious natural elements, elude Coast Guard patrols, fight off determined pirates and even one of their own clients. While her partners struggle to maintain difficult rendezvous, Jill, still connected to her computer, is being manipulated to complete the insane goal of the 21st century power broker who sent her back in time. Torn between loyalty and affection for both young men, she forms a plan to turn the tables on the evil conspirators and secure a future for her new friends. From the rocky shores of British Columbia to the infamous Chinese tunnels beneath Tacoma, Washington, danger and intrigue follow the Night Runner partners. This carefully crafted and historically correct adventure tale will have readers of all ages turning its pages into the wee hours as they vicariously live the life of the young rum-runners as they speed through the night in the Ghost, a truly marvelous Night Runner.

Détails: In one of his most ambitious physical efforts to date, Dean Karnazes attempted to run 50 marathons, in 50 states, in 50 days to raise awareness of youth obesity and urge Americans of all fitness levels to "take that next step." "UltraMarathon Man: 50 Marathons - 50 States - 50 Days", a Journeyfilm documentary, follows Dean’s incredible step-by-step journey across the country. Ultrarunning legend Dean Karnazes has run 262 miles-the equivalent of ten marathons-without rest. He has run over mountains, across Death Valley, and to the South Pole-and is probably the first person to eat an entire pizza while running. With an insight, candor, and humor rarely seen in sports memoirs (and written without the aid of a ghostwriter or cowriter), Ultramarathon Man has inspired tens of thousands of people-nonrunners and runners alike-to push themselves beyond their comfort zones and be reminded of "what it feels like to be truly alive," says Sam Fussell, author of Muscle. Ultramarathon Man answers the questions Karnazes is continually asked: - Why do you do it? - How do you do it? - Are you insane? And in the new paperback edition, Karnazes answers the two questions he was most asked on his book tour: - What, exactly, do you eat? - How do you train to stay in such good shape?

Détails: There was once a time, not so long ago, where our sporting heroes were treated with veneration. Players were players and their watchers were passive. Heroes lived on pedestals - they weren't public property. This book explores the many ways this dynamic has changed over the years. From the Barmy Army's loud but loyal support of the England cricket team to the jeers that greeted our returning footballers after the World Cup, the relationship between athlete and fan is now quite dramatically different. With his usual gentle wit and subtle intelligence, renowned sports writer Patrick Collins records one year spent observing a range of different sports and their many and varied fans. From a county cricket match at Canterbury - a place that resists change - to a corporate box at Wembley - watch them eat! see them drink! - from dog racing to swimming galas, this is a wonderful and humorous look at the world of sports - and the fans who make it all possible.

Détails: For Zack Thomson, living in the Nicholls Ward isn’t so bad. After his parents died, he developed strange and severe allergies, and the mental institution was the only place where he could be properly looked after. As strange as it was, it was home. He could watch as much television as he wanted; his best friend Charlie visited him often enough; and Nurse Ophelia -- the prettiest no-nonsense nurse ever -- sometimes took him bowling. Of course, that didn’t mean he had it easy. His allergies restricted his diet to strawberry smoothies, and being the only kid at the hospital could get lonely. But it never once crossed Zack’s mind to leave…until the night someone crashed through the front doors and told him to run. Now he’s on a race for answers -- about his past, his parents, and his strange sickness -- even as every step takes him closer to the darkest of truths.

Détails: A hilarious novel from a great comedic writer, one of the founders of The Chaser's War on Everything. No DJ can mix 'Celebration' into 'Come On Eileen' quite like Paul Johnson, the king of rancid retro. But while he has the musical jumper leads to get even the most dismal party started, he can't get his own life moving. Trapped in a job he despises, a perpetual failure with the ladies and living at home with his distinctly unhelpful parents, Paul's stuck in limbo while everyone around him is limbo-dancing. While he's avoided the corporate mousetrap that's ensnared his friend Nige, Paul dreams of one day playing his own music instead of John Farnham's. But it's much easier to joke about your problems with your friends than to do something about them. A romantic comedy that's equal parts bitingly cynical and naively idealistic, Disco Boy is a story for anyone who's ever hit the Pause button on their life, and found it hard to press Play again.

Détails: Armed with a keen eye and a terrible singing voice, writer Brian Raftery sets out across the globe, tracing karaoke's evolution from cult fad to multi-million dollar phenomenon. In Japan, he meets Daisuke Inoue, the godfather of karaoke; in Thailand, he follows a group of Americans hoping to win the Karaoke World Championships; and in New York City, he hangs out backstage with the world's longest-running heavy-metal karaoke band. Along the way, Raftery chronicles his own time as an obsessive karaoke fan, recalling a life's worth of noisy relationships and poor song choices, and analyzing the karaoke-bar merits of such artists as Prince, Bob Dylan and Fugazi. Part cultural history, part memoir, Don't Stop Believin': How Karaoke Conquered the World and Changed My Life is a hilarious and densely reported look at the liberating effects of a good sing-along.

Never quite at home there, she escaped her small town background and discovered a different way of life - making music. Lead singer for platinum-selling band The Selecter, Pauline Black was the Queen of British Ska. The only woman in a movement dominated by men, she toured with The Specials, Madness, Dexy's Midnight Runners when they were at the top of the charts - and, sometimes, on their worst behaviour. From childhood to fame, from singing to acting and broadcasting, from adoption to her recent search for her birth parents, Black By Design is a funny and enlightening story of music, race, family and roots.

Détails: The #1 New York Times bestselling debut novel that introduced Khaled Hosseini to millions of readers the world over. Amir and Hassan are childhood friends in the alleys and orchards of Kabul in the sunny days before the invasion of the Soviet army and Afghanistan’s decent into fanaticism. Both motherless, they grow up as close as brothers, but their fates, they know, are to be different. Amir’s father is a wealthy merchant; Hassan’ s father is his manservant. Amir belongs to the ruling caste of Pashtuns, Hassan to the despised Hazaras. This fragile idyll is broken by the mounting ethnic, religious, and political tensions that begin to tear Afghanistan apart. An unspeakable assault on Hassan by a gang of local boys tears the friends apart; Amir has witnessed his friend’s torment, but is too afraid to intercede. Plunged into self-loathing, Amir conspires to have Hassan and his father turned out of the household. When the Soviets invade Afghanistan, Amir and his father flee to San Francisco, leaving Hassan and his father to a pitiless fate. Only years later will Amir have an opportunity to redeem himself by returning to Afghanistan to begin to repay the debt long owed to the man who should have been his brother. Compelling, heartrending, and etched with details of a history never before told in fiction, The Kite Runner is a story of the ways in which we’re damned by our moral failures, and of the extravagant cost of redemption.

Détails: At once a novel and an open letter to Osama bin Laden, Incendiary is a shocking, hilarious, and heartbreaking debut that crashes head on into huge questions of right and wrong, good and evil, madness and sanity. Incendiary is the story of a working class woman who likes her simple life: watching Arsenal matches on the telly with her husband and little boy, fishsticks for dinner in their small flat, the occasional trip to the pub. One spring afternoon the woman, whom we know only by the nickname “Petal”, watches her husband and their son head happily off to Ashburton Grove, Arsenal’s brand new stadium, to see their favourite team play. A few hours later the horror of a terrorist bombing plays out on her television — the bombing of Ashburton Grove. “Petal” tells her own story in an extraordinary voice, one both desperate and sharply funny, speaking directly to the man responsible for the bombing. She shows the reader an incredible world, a London that is not quite real, in a time that is not quite our own. And as deeply enmeshed as the reader becomes in her reality, a tiny, persistent doubt begins to creep in about just what is reality and what is a manifestation of her griefstricken and distraught imagination. Dear Osama they want you dead or alive so the terror will stop. Well I wouldn’t know about that I mean rock ’n’ roll didn’t stop when Elvis died on the khazi it just got worse. Next thing you know there was Sonny & Cher and Dexy’s Midnight Runners. I’ll come to them later. My point is it’s easier to start these things than to finish them. I suppose you thought of that did you? There’s a reward of 25 million dollars on your head but don’t lose sleep on my account Osama. I have no information leading to your arrest or capture. I have no information full effing stop. I’m what you’d call an infidel and my husband called working class. There is a difference you know. But just supposing I did clap eyes on you. Supposing I saw you driving a Nissan Primera down towards Shoreditch and grassed you to the old bill. Well. I wouldn’t know how to spend 25 million dollars. It’s not as if I’ve got anyone to spend it on since you blew up my husband and my boy. —excerpt from Indendiary

Détails: Susan and Frank Black provide you with their discovery about teaching English as a second language in China - mainly that communism is alive and well structured in the classroom and that's a good thing. Classroom structure is something that anyone planning to teach in China, and everyone who is already doing it, should know about. Even the best designed lesson plan will not play if your students are not recognized for who they are: duty-driven, study-driven citizens of their Motherland. Another critical fact revealed is contained in the chapter: 'Who's Who in the Chinese Classroom?'. You will learn the truth about the classroom Monitor and about his or her duty to serve you, the Foreign Expert. There are many students ready to assist you in the classroom and this book reveals who they are and how they can be of help to you. The chapter on 'Teaching Group Work in China' lays out a first-of-its-kind real-life lesson plan for both skeptics and adventurous types. All the characters in this book are real, and any resemblance to real persons, living or dead is not coincidental. You will meet 'Midnight Runners' who sneak off into the night and Chinese English teachers who wish they could. You'll meet students who have a profound feeling of duty to their teachers and other students who don't. You will discover what some students believe about learning English as a second language and how their motives can help you facilitate a great class. The Little Red Book Teaching ESL in China is your official guide.

Détails: Liverpool's dynamic music scene gave the world The Beatles. What city could hope to follow that? But 12 years later, in 1974, lightning nearly struck twice. Deaf School were a band formed in John Lennon's old art college, rehearsing in the very same rooms. With their chaotic and wildly entertaining brand of rock cabaret, Deaf School were tipped for instant stardom and signed up by Warner Brothers in California. But suddenly, with the world at their feet, Deaf School were swept aside by Britain's punk rock revolution. "A great band," said the Sex Pistols' manager Malcolm McLaren. "But it's just as bad being too early as too late." Though their hopes were dashed the band has never surrendered. And 40 years on, Deaf School's influence is acknowledged by British bands from Madness to Dexy's Midnight Runners. Their reunion shows, still madly glamorous and eccentric, are tribal gatherings for a fanbase that never forgot them. The band's first full-length biography is written by British music writer Paul Du Noyer, a follower since Deaf School's early days in Liverpool. "Deaf School are such a delicious secret," he says. "It's almost a shame to reveal it."
