Détails: Celebrated storyteller Gaelen Foley brings her craft to new heights with Devil Takes a Bride, the seductive tale of a man bent on revenge and the beauty who teaches him to love again. . . . In the quiet English countryside, far from the intrigues of London, Lizzie Carlisle slowly mends her broken heart, devoting herself to her new position as lady’s companion to the Dowager Viscountess Strathmore— until her peaceful life is turned upside down by a visit from “Devil” Strathmore, the old woman’s untamed nephew—a dangerously handsome man whose wicked reputation hides a tortured soul. Devlin Kimball, Lord Strathmore, has spent years adventuring on the high seas, struggling to make his peace with the tragedy that claimed the lives of his family. But now he has uncovered the dark truth behind the so-called accident and swears retribution. He has no intention of taking a bride—until his eccentric aunt’s will forces he and Lizzie together, and Devlin finds his path to vengeance blocked by the stubborn but oh-so-tempting Miss Carlisle. Her passionate nature rivals his own. But disillusioned once by love, Lizzie will accept nothing less than his true devotion. . . .

Détails: Lottie Bingham is on the run. Lullingworth, is the ancestral home of the famous son and heir of the Tippetts Tea dynasty, Oliver Tippetts, who, after suffering a tragic loss has become a recluse. Oliver returns to Lullingworth to run the estate but cannot bring himself to enter the grand house that was once his family home. Instead, holed up at the gate house, he closes out the world and is lost in grief. On exploring her new home, Lottie discovers a tin of fascinating letters in the attic. Written by the mysterious Grace, they reveal astounding family secrets, long buried and forgotten, that when discovered by Lottie, have the potential to completely change hers and Oliver’s lives. These letters contain with them not only the answers to so many questions about the Tippetts family but also vital lessons in the art of grace. Détails: Is the eerie tree beside their bucolic cottage really a threat to ten-year-old Immy? Legend and hearsay give way to a creepy series of events in a captivating mystery. Do naught wrong by the mulberry tree, or she’ll take your daughters . . . one, two, three. Ten-year-old Immy and her family have run away from their storm cloud of problems to a tiny village in Cambridgeshire, England, where her depressed physician father can take a sabbatical and get back on his feet. Luckily, they find an adorable thatched cottage to begin a new life in. But their new home comes with one downside: in the backyard, there is an ancient, dark, and fierce-looking mulberry tree that has ceased bearing any fruit. There’s a legend that the towering tree steals away girls who live in the cottage on the eve of their eleventh birthday, and villagers even cross the street when they pass by the house. Of course, Immy thinks this is all ridiculous. But then she starts to hear a strange song in her head. . . . In a page-turner perfect for middle-graders, Allison Rushby folds themes of new-school travails, finding friends, being embarrassed by parents, and learning empathy into a deliciously goose-bumpy supernatural mystery.

Détails: Cassie Pengear was expecting a relaxing holiday in a Cotswolds village near Lower Slaughter, staying in a cottage borrowed from a friend of her landlady. She was not expecting to spend most of her first day there trying to find someone to give them the key to the cottage. And she definitely wasn't expecting to walk in the front door and find a body on the sitting room rug. Now the local police consider her and Mrs. Albright suspects, and the London man she was counting on turns out to be Inspector Wainwright. If she wants to clear their names, Cassie will have to solve the murder near Slaughter. In a Victorian England that almost existed, a steampunk London where tinkerers and clockwork devices exist alongside handsome cabs and corsets, murder is still solved by traditional observation and intuition. This is the London where American typist Cassandra Pengear finds herself stumbling over corpses and helping Scotland Yard detectives solve murders (although they inexplicably prefer to call it interfering). Follow her adventures in the Cassie Pengear Mystery series, beginning with The Killing at the Carnival.

Détails: In the seventh of the River Cottage Handbook series, John Wright explores the culinary delights of the British hedgerow. Hedgerows, moors, meadows and woods - these hold a veritable feast for the forager. In this hugely informative and witty handbook, John Wright reveals how to spot the free and delicious pickings to be found in the British countryside, and how to prepare and cook them. First John touches on the basics for the hedgerow forager, with an introduction to conservation, safety, the law, and all the equipment that you may need. Next he guides you through the tasty edible species to be found. Each one is accompanied by photographs for identification, along with their conservation status, habitat, distribution, season, taste, texture and cooking methods - not forgetting, of course, some fascinating asides and diversions about their taxonomy and history. Fifty species are covered, including bilberries, blackberries, raspberries, common mallow, dandelions, hedge garlic, horseradish, pignuts, nettles, sloes, sweet chestnuts, water mint, bulrushes and wild cherries. After this there is a section describing the poisonous species to steer clear of, with identifying photographs as well as warnings about nasty 'lookalikes'. Finally, there are thirty delicious recipes to show how you can make the most of your (edible) findings. Introduced by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Hedgerow is an indispensable household reference, and an essential book to have by your side for every trip into the countryside.

Détails: Travels in Egypt and Nubia, Syria, and the Holy Land is a detailed journal from two commanders in the British Royal Navy, documenting their time in the Middle East during a "tour of the Continent." The result is an extensive and intricate study of Middle East culture and land. Included are sections on Egypt and Nubia, Syria, and Petra and the Dead Sea. Entries are organized by date and include subjects such as, "Our Party and its Objects," "Crocodiles," "Visit to the Pyramids," "Convent on Mount Carmel," "Troubles with our Escort," and "Observations on the Character and Customs of the Arabs." This entertaining and informative read will be of interest to historians and students of Middle Eastern culture. The honorable Captain CHARLES LEONARD IRBY (1789-1845) was a captain in the British Royal Navy. He was married to Frances Mangles, daughter of John Mangles. He died at age 56 on December 3, 1845. Détails: The compelling, inspiring, and comically sublime New York Times bestseller about one man’s coming-of-age, set during the twilight of apartheid and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed. Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa’s tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle. Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man’s relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother—his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life. The eighteen personal essays collected here are by turns hilarious, dramatic, and deeply affecting. Whether subsisting on caterpillars for dinner during hard times, being thrown from a moving car during an attempted kidnapping, or just trying to survive the life-and-death pitfalls of dating in high school, Trevor illuminates his curious world with an incisive wit and unflinching honesty. His stories weave together to form a moving and searingly funny portrait of a boy making his way through a damaged world in a dangerous time, armed only with a keen sense of humor and a mother’s unconventional, unconditional love.
