Détails: Named one of the best books of 2017 by The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, & Vox The father of virtual reality explains its dazzling possibilities by reflecting on his own lifelong relationship with technology Bridging the gap between tech mania and the experience of being inside the human body, Dawn of the New Everything is a look at what it means to be human at a moment of unprecedented technological possibility. Through a fascinating look back over his life in technology, Jaron Lanier, an interdisciplinary scientist and father of the term “virtual reality,” exposes VR’s ability to illuminate and amplify our understanding of our species, and gives readers a new perspective on how the brain and body connect to the world. An inventive blend of autobiography, science writing, philosophy and advice, this book tells the wild story of his personal and professional life as a scientist, from his childhood in the UFO territory of New Mexico, to the loss of his mother, the founding of the first start-up, and finally becoming a world-renowned technological guru. Understanding virtual reality as being both a scientific and cultural adventure, Lanier demonstrates it to be a humanistic setting for technology. While his previous books offered a more critical view of social media and other manifestations of technology, in this book he argues that virtual reality can actually make our lives richer and fuller.

Détails: A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. . . . “The war is over. The Separatists have been defeated, and the Jedi rebellion has been foiled. We stand on the threshold of a new beginning.”—Emperor Palpatine For a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights brought peace and order to the Galactic Republic, aided by their connection to the mystical energy field known as the Force. But they were betrayed—and the entire galaxy has paid the price. It is the Age of the Empire. Now Emperor Palpatine, once Chancellor of the Republic and secretly a Sith follower of the dark side of the Force, has brought his own peace and order to the galaxy. Peace through brutal repression, and order through increasing control of his subjects’ lives. But even as the Emperor tightens his iron grip, others have begun to question his means and motives. And still others, whose lives were destroyed by Palpatine’s machinations, lay scattered about the galaxy like unexploded bombs, waiting to go off. . . . The first Star Wars novel created in collaboration with the Lucasfilm Story Group, Star Wars: A New Dawn is set during the legendary “Dark Times” between Episodes III and IV and tells the story of how two of the lead characters from the animated series Star Wars Rebels first came to cross paths. Featuring a foreword by Dave Filoni. Praise for A New Dawn “A New Dawn is a fine start to the new Expanded Universe. [John Jackson] Miller steps confidently into the unexplored territory and owns it; he’s crafted a story with pacing and dialogue that feels like classic Star Wars.”—Nerdist “An entertaining adventure . . . with a cast of heroes that mixes laughter with intriguing depths of character. . . . John Jackson Miller packs in plenty of action and surprises.”—Roqoo Depot “A confidently told story that gives fans a lot of reason to be hopeful about what’s to come as we move into this new phase of Star Wars . . . The book certainly got me even more excited for Rebels and to see more of Kanan and Hera’s adventures. We’re also introduced to other characters I would love to see again at some point, whether on Rebels, in another book or, who knows, in live-action at some point.”—IGN “A New Dawn delivers a classic Star Wars experience that fans of all ages will be able to enjoy. It is extremely well-written, with an incredibly diverse cast too. Miller’s prose can easily suck readers in, and leave them speechless when 100 pages have flown by in the blink of an eye.”—Far Far Away Radio “A New Dawn brings us into this new dawn of storytelling with energy, excitement, and characters that have become instantly ensconced into the Star Wars vernacular, and the results will satisfy Star Wars fans of many different palates.”—Coffee with Kenobi “A New Dawn is a well-written novel full of intrigue and twists and turns that does an excellent job of letting Star Wars fans get to know Kanan and Hera.”—Tosche Station “A New Dawn finds an era never before written about in the Star Wars universe—the years prior to the original movie, Episode IV—in robust good health. The narrative takes place on two worlds and a handful of ships in between them, but as with the best of all Star Wars moments, hints at hidden depths beyond.”—Mashable

Détails: In the explosive finale to the epic romantic saga, Bella has one final choice to make. Should she stay mortal and strengthen her connection to the werewolves, or leave it all behind to become a vampire? When you loved the one who was killing you, it left you no options. How could you run, how could you fight, when doing so would hurt that beloved one? If your life was all you had to give, how could you not give it? If it was someone you truly loved? To be irrevocably in love with a vampire is both fantasy and nightmare woven into a dangerously heightened reality for Bella Swan. Pulled in one direction by her intense passion for Edward Cullen, and in another by her profound connection to werewolf Jacob Black, a tumultuous year of temptation, loss, and strife have led her to the ultimate turning point. Her imminent choice to either join the dark but seductive world of immortals or to pursue a fully human life has become the thread from which the fates of two tribes hangs. This astonishing, breathlessly anticipated conclusion to the Twilight Saga illuminates the secrets and mysteries of this spellbinding romantic epic. It's here! #1 bestselling author Stephenie Meyer makes a triumphant return to the world of Twilight with the highly anticipated companion, Midnight Sun: the iconic love story of Bella and Edward told from the vampire's point of view. "People do not want to just read Meyer's books; they want to climb inside them and live there." -- Time "A literary phenomenon." -- The New York Times

Détails: Half a decade after Arabs across the Middle East poured into the streets to demand change, hopes for democracy have disappeared in a maelstrom of violence and renewed state repression. Egypt remains an authoritarian state, Syria and Yemen are in the midst of devastating civil wars, Libya has descended into anarchy, and the self-declared Islamic State rules a large swath of territory. Even Turkey, which also experienced large-scale protests, has abandoned its earlier shift toward openness and democracy and now more closely resembles an autocracy. How did things go so wrong so quickly across a wide range of regimes? In False Dawn, noted Middle East regional expert Steven A. Cook looks at the trajectory of events across the region from the initial uprising in Tunisia to the failed coup in Turkey to explain why the Middle Eastern uprisings did not succeed. Despite appearances, there were no true revolutions in the Middle East five years ago: none of the affected societies underwent social revolutions, and the old structures of power were never eliminated. Even supposed successes like Tunisia still face significant barriers to democracy because of the continued strength of old regime players. Libya, the state that came closest to revolution, has fragmented into chaos, and Turkey's president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has used the recent coup against him as grounds for a widespread crackdown on his opponents, reinforcing the Turkish leader's personal power. After taking stock of how and why the uprisings failed to produce lasting change, Cook considers the role of the United States in the region. What Washington cannot do, Cook argues, is shape the politics of the Middle East going forward. While many in the policymaking community believe that the United States must "get the Middle East right," American influence is actually quite limited; the future of the region lies in the hands of the people who live there. Authoritative and powerfully argued, False Dawn promises to be a major work on one of the most important historical events of the past quarter century.

Détails: Trailing the rut impressed on the sands of time by the rolling wheel of history, I stepped outside the neat edge of protocol, and dissect into characters shared in human societies from the viewpoint of an African setting! This view anchors on a deliberate effort to explore into African mythology, exposing its strengths and pitfalls and an attempt to remodel a culturally-rooted belief system into a modern and more egalitarian societal ideology. This work is done in retrospect back to the fore, looking at how the African setting was and where it is now and trying to define the transformation in its value systems, and the general response of people when given the opportunity to take decisions for a change in their conditions! I have painted a hypothetical picture of a village Ileamo which is a fair demographic reflection of the Nigerian cultural terrain. This model is an apt analogue of what is obtainable in most human societies, although in varying degrees, particularly the developing world! This work reflects a panoply of cultures in view of the variegated ethnic and cultural diversities in any African setting as in other cultures! The play also strongly reflects a transition from cultural dogmas to a societal value based on facts. The peoples present determination to cross check all cultural dogmas with real and practicable facts. I feel this is where African settings are now, as do other cultural settings. However, this play is more of an eye-opener to better understanding of the rich cultural heritage of Africans and the need to appreciate the strengths of the ancient traditional institutions and all the transformation they have undergone but more importantly, how the present drive for personal gain at the expense of human value, good sense and the common good has seriously eroded into a once rich cultural heritage to one based on kick backs. Hence, the reason for the recent rat-race for materialism! It also pictures how the ancient traditional institutions played on the ignorance and absolute loyalty of subjects to pervert truth and justice. Thus, I have decided to employ the use of praise chants, drumming and dance in the body of the play as this is central to the African life and in order to portray the spirit behind the inspiration of the write up. The rhythms of the drums synchronized with the praise chants. However, since plays can very rarely be produced without necessary changes to the script, you may make cuts and changes in scenes if necessary! To cast this play, it is imperative that all the casts catch the spirit behind this write up and they should act in a typical African way and style. This play is a lively one in all its simplicity, injecting news life into African drama and evoking greater audience participation and thus, building bridges of understanding into an age-old cultural heritage of which Africa is synonymous with! Finally, as you take an excursion back to the fore, youll discover all by yourself the sensibilities that make a people thick, where they derailed and then understand inside out the scale of the veil thats responsible for the divide between the 1st and 3rd worlds! And then propounding possible hypothesis to decades of tumult that had grounded a people, at least from the brief account of an insider.

Détails: Dynamic young Stanford biologist Nathan Wolfe reveals the surprising origins of the world's most deadly viruses, and how we can overcome catastrophic pandemics. In The Viral Storm, award-winning biologist Nathan Wolfe tells the story of how viruses and human beings have evolved side by side through history; how deadly viruses like HIV, swine flu, and bird flu almost wiped us out in the past; and why modern life has made our species vulnerable to the threat of a global pandemic. Wolfe's research missions to the jungles of Africa and the rain forests of Borneo have earned him the nickname "the Indiana Jones of virus hunters," and here Wolfe takes readers along on his groundbreaking and often dangerous research trips—to reveal the surprising origins of the most deadly diseases and to explain the role that viruses have played in human evolution. In a world where each new outbreak seems worse than the one before, Wolfe points the way forward, as new technologies are brought to bear in the most remote areas of the world to neutralize these viruses and even harness their power for the good of humanity. His provocative vision of the future will change the way we think about viruses, and perhaps remove a potential threat to humanity's survival.

Détails: A thousand years after a global cataclysm, Earth has been remade into a lush, thriving ecosystem, but with a new dominant species: the machines. These massive, animal-like robots fills the land, oceans, and skies, serving as the guardians and enforcers of the revived natural order. New generations of humans live on in pre-industrial tribes, without knowledge of the doomed civilization that preceded them, that of the “Old Ones” – us. A hero known to all tribes, Alloy has defended them against deadly machines, infamous cults, vengeful insurgents and dangers from the ancient past. She achieved her greatest triumph defeating the rogue A.I. HADES, who sought to end all life on Earth. With Hades vanquished Aloy disappeared, her purpose and destination shrouded in mystery. Talanah was born to a family of noble hunters in Meridian, capital to the most powerful of Horizon’s tribes: the Carja. With Aloy’s help, Talanah was able to earn the title of Sunhawk, much to the chagrin of elitist Lodge members. In return she helped Aloy defeat HADES’ forces at Meridian. With her family’s legacy restored, Talanah reformed the Lodge, opening its ranks to all tribes. Despite achieving her life’s goal, however, restlessness began to gnaw at her heart. Dealing with Meridian’s bureaucrats and the troublesome remnants of the old Hunters Lodge elites failed to give her comfort, so she set out into the wilds, hoping to quell her restlessness with a contract to hunt a fearsome new machine – a Clawstrider. But the hunt proved more than she’d bargained for. Now, after recovering from an injury thanks to the aid of a mysterious hunter named Amadis, Talanah must end the threat of this hunter-killer machine. But that’s not her only problem. Kyran, a rogue Lodge member whom she denied the contract to, seeks its reward, unaware of the hunter-killer’s presence. Talanah is one of the few who understands the extent of the danger posed by this new strain of machine, thanks to a run-in with a good friend…
