Détails: Four-year-old identical twins Jace and Jem—born of the Breedline species, a race of humans that have special powers and the gift to change into wolf form—were tragically present when their mother, Katlyn Gray, was murdered. Only one family member the twins had left was their uncle, Katlyn's brother, Jackson. Jackson was found brutally beaten where their mother was murdered and left for dead. No other family members reached out to take the boys after they were found alone, still in the house where their mother lay dead and their uncle unconscious. A married couple, physicians at the emergency room where the boys are taken to—John and Sarah Chamberlain—instantly fell in love with them and became their foster parents in hopes of later adopting them. Jackson reunites with his nephews after coming out of a coma three months after his attack and approves of his nephews’ new home with John and Sarah. He lets the couple adopt them only if they promise to let him stay close by the boys and build a relationship as they grow up. Jackson Gray is their only link to what the boys are and what they will become later. The shocking new life they discover has other unknown species and mystical creatures that all must be kept a secret from the human world. When they are introduced into the Breedline Covenant, they grow up learning all about the Breedline laws and what will happen to them when they reach the age of eighteen. As they get older, Jace struggled with the loss of his mother and all the flashbacks of her death. His life continues to spin out of control with more devastation when their real father that is possessed by a Chiang-shih demon returns. His brother Jem stands by his side, constantly trying to keep him from self-destruction, and total disaster. Just when Jace has lost all hope for living, he meets Tessa Fairchild, his Breedline bonded mate. They are instantly captivated by each other, as Tessa feels an alluring, seductive connection towards him. He's also the sexiest man she has ever laid eyes on, but she has been fighting her on own demons trying to figure out why she has been haunted by mysterious dreams about a black wolf since childhood. Plus she is ten years older than him. Why would he want to date an older woman when this sexy, hot, god of a man could have any woman he wants? As Jace tries to win her over, and earn her trust, he finds out Tessa has no knowledge of being born an identical twin and that she is a Breedline species.

Détails: An untold Cold War story: how the CIA tried to infiltrate a radical group of U.S. military deserters, a tale that leads from a bizarre political cult to the heart of the Washington establishment Stockholm, 1968. A thousand American deserters and draft-resisters are arriving to escape the war in Vietnam. They’re young, they’re radical, and they want to start a revolution. Some of them even want to take the fight to America. The Swedes treat them like pop stars—but the CIA is determined to stop all that. It’s a job for the deep-cover men of Operation Chaos and their allies—agents who know how to infiltrate organizations and destroy them from inside. Within months, the GIs have turned their fire on one another. Then the interrogations begin—to discover who among them has been brainwashed, Manchurian Candidate-style, to assassinate their leaders. When Matthew Sweet began investigating this story, he thought the madness was over. He was wrong. Instead, he became the confidant of an eccentric and traumatized group of survivors—each with his own theory about the traitors in their midst. All Sweet has to do is find out the truth. And stay sane. Which may be difficult when one of his interviewees accuses him of being a CIA agent and another suspects that he’s part of a secret plot by the British royal family to start World War III. By that time, he’s deep in the labyrinth of truths and half-truths, wondering where reality ends and delusion begins.

Détails: In this generous collection of book reviews and literary essays, legendary Village Voice rock critic Robert Christgau showcases the passion that made him a critic—his love for the written word. Many selections address music, from blackface minstrelsy to punk and hip-hop, artists from Lead Belly to Patti Smith, and fellow critics from Ellen Willis and Lester Bangs to Nelson George and Jessica Hopper. But Book Reports also teases out the popular in the Bible and 1984 as well as pornography and science fiction, and analyzes at length the cultural theory of Raymond Williams, the detective novels of Walter Mosley, the history of bohemia, and the 2008 financial crisis. It establishes Christgau as not just the Dean of American Rock Critics, but one of America's most insightful cultural critics as well.

Détails: Agile has the power to transform work--but only if it's implemented the right way. For decades business leaders have been painfully aware of a huge chasm: They aspire to create nimble, flexible enterprises. But their day-to-day reality is silos, sluggish processes, and stalled innovation. Today, agile is hailed as the essential bridge across this chasm, with the potential to transform a company and catapult it to the head of the pack. Not so fast. In this clear-eyed, indispensable book, Bain & Company thought leader Darrell Rigby and his colleagues Sarah Elk and Steve Berez provide a much-needed reality check. They dispel the myths and misconceptions that have accompanied agile's rise to prominence--the idea that it can reshape an organization all at once, for instance, or that it should be used in every function and for all types of work. They illustrate that agile teams can indeed be powerful, making people's jobs more rewarding and turbocharging innovation, but such results are possible only if the method is fully understood and implemented the right way. The key, they argue, is balance. Every organization must optimize and tightly control some of its operations, and at the same time innovate. Agile, done well, enables vigorous innovation without sacrificing the efficiency and reliability essential to traditional operations. The authors break down how agile really works, show what not to do, and explain the crucial importance of scaling agile properly in order to reap its full benefit. They then lay out a road map for leading the transition to a truly agile enterprise. Agile isn't a goal in itself; it's a means to becoming a high-performance operation. Doing Agile Right is a must-have guide for any company trying to make the transition--or trying to sustain high agility.

Détails: Greek and Roman Classics in the British Struggle for Social Reform presents an original and carefully argued case for the importance of classical ideas, education and self-education in the personal development and activities of British social reformers in the 19th and first six decades of the 20th century. Usually drawn from the lower echelons of the middle class and the most aspirational artisanal and working-class circles, the prominent reformers, revolutionaries, feminists and educationalists of this era, far from regarding education in Latin and Greek as the preserve of the upper classes and inherently reactionary, were consistently inspired by the Mediterranean Classics and contested the monopoly on access to them often claimed by the wealthy and aristocratic elite. The essays, several of which draw on previously neglected and unpublished sources, cover literary figures (Coleridge, the 'Cockney Classicist' poets including Keats, and Dickens), different cultural media (burlesque theatre, body-building, banner art, poetry, journalism and fiction), topics in social reform (the desirability of revolution, suffrage, poverty, social exclusion, women's rights, healthcare, eugenics, town planning, race relations and workers' education), as well as political affiliations and agencies (Chartists, Trade Unions, the WEA, political parties including the Fabians, the Communist Party of Great Britain and the Labour Party). The sixteen essays in this volume restore to the history of British Classics some of the subject's ideological complexity and instrumentality in social progress, a past which is badly needed in the current debates over the future of the discipline. Contributors include specialists in English Literature, History, Classics and Art.

Détails: From Africa to Asia and Latin America, the era of climate wars has begun. Extreme weather is breeding banditry, humanitarian crisis, and state failure. In Tropic of Chaos, investigative journalist Christian Parenti travels along the front lines of this gathering catastrophe--the belt of economically and politically battered postcolonial nations and war zones girding the planet's midlatitudes. Here he finds failed states amid climatic disasters. But he also reveals the unsettling presence of Western military forces and explains how they see an opportunity in the crisis to prepare for open-ended global counterinsurgency. Parenti argues that this incipient "climate fascism"--a political hardening of wealthy states-- is bound to fail. The struggling states of the developing world cannot be allowed to collapse, as they will take other nations down as well. Instead, we must work to meet the challenge of climate-driven violence with a very different set of sustainable economic and development policies.

An unforgettable contemporary fable about stepping out of life after it cruelly turns everything upside-down, and finding a resolution to the unsolvable problem of loss in the beauty and strangeness of the everyday, Quiet Chaos is another literary wonder from the author of The Force of the Past.

Détails: Note: Although this book is listed as biography/autobiography, it is actually FOLKLORE from the Midland Region of the United States and can be considered as Americana and nostalgia. Elizabeth Pearl Lowe Boyd (1904 - 1965) grew up on farms in Warren County, Kentucky, near Bowling Green. Unlike many girls of that era, she went on from the rural, one-room school to graduate from what is now Western Kentucky University (a degree in English and Latin). After a year of teaching in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, she moved to Cross City, Florida, where she taught another year and married Robert U. Boyd, a railroad agent. By 1935 they had settled in Dunedin, Florida, where they raised their eight children. From 1936 until her death, she wrote a popular column in the local weekly paper, The Dunedin Times, titled From My Kitchen Window. The topics she wrote about were many and varied, and her focus was on the ordinary and commonplace. Over two hundred of these articles were about her recollections of growing up in rural Kentucky, and they were selected for this book. Although Florida had become her home, her heart remained in Kentucky. It was there, for that sweet land and for the hills and seasons, that she felt deeply attached. She never lost her yearnings for the hills, for the agrarian life of Kentucky. And it was of rural people, life, times, and history that she wrote most eloquently. Pearl Lowe Boyd (the name she went by) was energetic, jolly, determined and focused, civic minded, and above all, a mother. She spread her children out over twenty-two years, and she was fascinated by her little ones, their beauty, their trust, their development and their emergence into big people. Writing was the forum through which she best expressed herself - the same as music is for a musician. In her earliest writings and diaries she stated her desires to be a writer. Her opinions were carefully thoughtful, erudite, and tactfully voiced. The only time I remember that she got her dander up and went on an all-out crusade was when she got wind that the town leaders were planning to have an enormous, beautiful oak tree behind the Chamber of Commerce cut down. They lost, she won, and the tree is standing today. She loved to read and kept lists of books she devoured - sometimes over a hundred in a years span. Yet her own mother was opposed to education beyond the eighth grade for a farm girl and was very much disapproving of her reading novels - even the writings by Dickens. It was her father who encouraged her education and her love of books and writing. She was the kind of person who looked for the good in things, in people, in nature, and in life. Although she had periods of worry and depression, she never let them slow her down. The reasoning behind her positive outlook, which she described to me during one of my down times, was pragmatic and positive: why choose to dwell on the hurtful and the bad when one can live much more effectively by dwelling on the beautiful, the exciting, and the good of life? She grew up during Womens Suffrage. As an early feminist, she insisted on fairness in all things for women as for men, yet in her own life she was comfortable with first being a had-working housewife and mother and being a civic leader and writer second. Among her homespun articles she also wrote blistering articles against the treatment of Jews and others during World War II and against bigotry during the early days of desegregation. The n word was certainly not permitted in her home. I remember her as a wise person. On one occasion when two of her children were arguing over splitting up a remaining chunk of cake, she utilized the King Solomon ploy by allowing one to make the slice and the other to take the first piece. Of course, the two pieces were precisely identical. Music was a part of our lives with

Finn faces more monsters than ever in Darkmouth: Chaos Descends, the third book in the tween fantasy series that Kirkus Reviews called “Ghostbusters meets Percy Jackson as written by Terry Pratchett.” Finn isn’t even a full-fledged Legend Hunter yet, but he’s already had to save the world—twice. The Legends are planning their next attack and, of course, it’s up to Finn to stop them. Too bad he’d rather be doing…anything else. Perfect for fans of How to Train Your Dragon, this series is a hilarious and action-packed adventure that’s filled with beasts of the winged, fanged, and hungry variety.
