Détails: The Author was born just post the second world war-a member of the so called ‘Baby Boomer ‘ Generation in London .During the book he describes to us what life was like growing up in those far off , and very different ,days . Whilst at its core the Book is autobiographical , it is much more than that. It has both comedy and tragedy and is full of well researched facts on many of the events of the 50s , 60s and 70s and beyond that have touched his life and the prevailing ‘Zeitgeist ‘ of those years .It seeks to inform in many areas. He shares the business lessons that came to guide him in his career. The book goes on, in an extremely frank and honest way , to describe his hilarious early experiences as a teenager looking for sex and love , his story of his accomplished work and rugby football careers , his topsy turvy experiences of sailing , skiing and amateur dramatics , his views on marriage and fatherhood , and relationships with women in general , again providing us with both insight and humour throughout ! Along Brian’s lifetime journey we laugh and cry with the author , who has enjoyed much success , happiness and fulfilment in his life in spite of the ever present danger of Depression .

Détails: The New York Times bestseller with more than 1 million copies sold worldwide Inspired by the incredible true story of one Jewish family separated at the start of World War II, determined to survive—and to reunite—We Were the Lucky Ones is a tribute to the triumph of hope and love against all odds. “Love in the face of global adversity? It couldn't be more timely.” —Glamour It is the spring of 1939 and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer. The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland. But soon the horrors overtaking Europe will become inescapable and the Kurcs will be flung to the far corners of the world, each desperately trying to navigate his or her own path to safety. As one sibling is forced into exile, another attempts to flee the continent, while others struggle to escape certain death, either by working grueling hours on empty stomachs in the factories of the ghetto or by hiding as gentiles in plain sight. Driven by an unwavering will to survive and by the fear that they may never see one another again, the Kurcs must rely on hope, ingenuity, and inner strength to persevere. An extraordinary, propulsive novel, We Were the Lucky Ones demonstrates how in the face of the twentieth century’s darkest moment, the human spirit can endure and even thrive.

Détails: The “fascinating” #1 international bestseller of a quest across centuries by two intrepid women to reunite the pieces of a powerful, ancient chess set (Los Angeles Times Book Review). A fabulous, bejeweled chess set that belonged to Charlemagne has been buried in a Pyrenees abbey for a thousand years. As the bloody French Revolution rages in Paris, the nuns dig it up and scatter its pieces across the globe because, when united, the set contains a secret power that could topple civilizations. To keep the set from falling into the wrong hands, two novices, Valentine and Mireille, embark on an adventure that begins in the streets of Paris and leads to Russia, Egypt, Corsica, and into the heart of the Algerian Sahara. Two hundred years later, while on assignment in Algeria, computer expert Catherine Velis finds herself drawn unwillingly into the deadly “Game” still swirling around the legendary chess set—a game that will require her to risk her life and match wits with diabolical forces. Détails: Penguin Decades bring you the novels that helped shape modern Britain. When they were published, some were bestsellers, some were considered scandalous, and others were simply misunderstood. All represent their time and helped define their generation, while today each is considered a landmark work of storytelling. Kingsley Amis's Lucky Jim was published in 1954, and is a hilarious satire of British university life. Jim Dixon is bored by his job as a medieval history lecturer. His days are only improved by pulling faces behind the backs of his superiors as he tries desperately to survive provincial bourgeois society, an unbearable 'girlfriend' and petty humiliation at the hands of Professor Welch. Lucky Jim is one of the most famous and influential of all British post-War novels.

Emily and her mom were always lucky. But Emily’s mom’s luck ran out three years ago when she succumbed to cancer, and nothing has felt right for Emily since. Now, the summer before her senior year, things are getting worse. Not only has Emily wrecked things with her boyfriend Matt, who her mom adored, but her dad is selling the house she grew up in and giving her mom’s belongings away. Soon, she’ll have no connections left to Mom but her lucky quarter. And with her best friend away for the summer and her other friends taking her ex’s side, the only person she has to talk to about it is Blake, the swoony new girl she barely knows. But that’s when Emily finds the list—her mom’s senior year summer bucket list—buried in a box in the back of her closet. When Blake suggests that Emily take it on as a challenge, the pair set off on a journey to tick each box and help Emily face her fears before everything changes. As they go further down the list, Emily finally begins to feel close to her mom again, but her bond with Blake starts to deepen, too, into something she wasn’t expecting. Suddenly Emily must face another fear: accepting the secret part of herself she never got a chance to share with the person who knew her best.

Most people who go missing are never found. But Alice was the lucky one... As a child, Alice was stolen from her backyard in a tiny Indiana community, but against the odds, her policeman father tracked her down within twenty-four hours and rescued her from harm. In the aftermath of the crime, her family decided to move to Chicago and close the door on that horrible day. Yet Alice hasn’t forgotten. She devotes her spare time volunteering for a website called The Doe Pages scrolling through pages upon pages of unidentified people, searching for clues that could help reunite families with their missing loved ones. When a face appears on Alice’s screen that she recognizes, she’s stunned to realize it’s the same man who kidnapped her decades ago. The post is deleted as quickly as it appeared, leaving Alice with more questions than answers. Embarking on a search for the truth, she enlists the help of friends from The Doe Pages to connect the dots and find her kidnapper before he hurts someone else. Then Alice crosses paths with Merrily Cruz, another woman who’s been hunting for answers of her own. Together, they begin to unravel a dark, painful web of lies that will change what they thought they knew—and could cost them everything. Twisting and compulsively readable, The Lucky One explores the lies we tell ourselves to feel safe.

Détails: The National Book Award winning author returns to his original fictional territory--the lives of the dispossessed in San Francisco--with a parable about the limitations of desire and life at the margins of society In such earlier works of fiction as The Rainbow Stories and The Royal Family, William T. Vollmann wrote of pimps, prostitutes, addicts and homeless dreamers in San Francisco's Tenderloin district. In this new novel, Vollmann returns there with a story that centers around a woman with magical powers whom everyone loves, and who has to love them all back. After being initiated into a coven of island witches, Neva begins to fulfill her fate in a Tenderloin dive bar. Her worshippers include Richard, the introverted, alcoholic, occasionally omniscient narrator; a profane, aggressive transgender sex worker named Shantelle; the brisk but motherly barmaid Francine; and the former Frank, who has renamed herself after her idol Judy Garland. When Judy starts to love Neva too much, Judy's retired policeman boyfriend embarks on a mission of exposure and destruction. Crafted out of language by turns spiritual and sexually graphic, The Lucky Star aches with compassion as it explores celebrity culture, gender identity, incest, Christian sacrifice and, most of all, the quotidian and sometimes faltering heroism of marginalized people who in the face of humiliation and outright violence seek to love in their own way, and stand up for who they are.

Détails: The first book in a gripping new Ava Lee spin-off series featuring fan-favourite Uncle Chow Tung and his ascendancy to the head of the Triad gang in Fanling. Hong Kong, 1969. The Dragon Head of the Fanling Triad has died and there is a struggle to replace him among senior members of the gang. Normally, the Deputy Mountain Master is next in line, but this one is weak and ineffectual and has only survived because of the protection of the Dragon Head. Up to this point, the Fanling Triad has operated in relative isolation from neighbouring gangs, but the Dragon Head’s death has drawn attention to the area — and to its wealth. Other gangs start to make threatening moves and it’s obvious to the senior members of the Fanling Triad that they need a leader who can fend off the threats, unite the membership, and maintain their prosperity. There are several candidates. The least conspicuous is the White Paper Fan, their young administrator. His name is Chow Tung, but many of those who work with him already refer to him as “Uncle”...

Détails: He's the most dangerous gunman in the West. She's a "lady doctor" he can't resist. Will his secret torments keep them apart? How can she handle a wounded outlaw no respectable woman should go near? Romance and intrigue are about to collide in a steamy Texas town where sin, scandal and violence rule the night. A strange sort of current flowed between them, charged with as much intensity as a bolt of lightning. Devon felt it tighten around him, binding him to her in some inexplicable way that he couldn't explain and didn't want to acknowledge. His tone was involuntarily savage when he mut¬tered, "If I don't leave soon, Maggie Malone, I may do exactly that." "Do--?" He stood up, blood boiling in his veins as if heated. The memory of her soft skin was a temptation that he did his best to resist. "You know what I mean, dam¬mit." "No. I don't think I do. Devon . . . what are you--?" Without pausing to think, he reached out to pull her to him, one hand around her wrist and the other hand moving to the small of her back. Maggie seemed to melt into him, her body boneless, soft breasts pressing against his chest as he pulled her close. His mouth found hers, and he kissed her with a fierce urgency that grew hotter and higher when she made a small noise in the back of her throat. Ah God, she was so sweet and fine, so damn fine. He couldn't help himself. He knew better than to touch her, better than to kiss her. He knew he wouldn't want to stop at kisses, and Maggie deserved to be treated with more respect. So why wasn't he stopping? Virginia Brown is the award-winning author of nearly fifty novels in historical romance, mystery and general fiction.

Détails: Ghost stories tap into our most primal emotions as they encourage us to confront the timeless question: What comes after death? Here, in tales that are by turn scary, funny, philosophic, and touching, you’ll find that question sharpened, split, reconsidered—and met with a multitude of answers. A spirit who is fated to spend eternity reliving the exact moment she lost her chance at love, ghostly trees that haunt the occupant of a wooden house, specters that snatch anyone who steps into the shadows, and parakeets that serve as mouthpieces for the dead: these are just a few of the characters in this extraordinary compendium of one hundred ghost stories. Kevin Brockmeier’s fiction has always explored the space between the fantastical and the everyday with profundity and poignancy. As in his previous books, The Ghost Variations discovers new ways of looking at who we are and what matters to us, exploring how mysterious, sad, strange, and comical it is to be alive—or, as it happens, not to be.

Leaning his hard body against hers to pin her to the rock again, Jake asked roughly, "You could try by remembering that it's against the law to rob trains." "You work for Durant--what do you care about the law?" "I might go easy on you if you'll talk. Where's the rest of your gang?" The mutinous stare she gave him was indicative of the answers he would receive, and Lassiter shrugged. "Fine. Stay quiet. I'm getting paid to stop 'Colorado Kate,' and I guess that's who I'm taking back with me." "You're taking me to Durant?" she asked softly. He nodded. So this was really the end. She had no illusions as to Durant's intentions. He'd kill her just as ruthlessly as he'd killed her parents. "Care to tell me where I can find the Lost Canyon Gang?" Jake asked When she refused to answer, he curled his fingers around her wrists and straightened, pulling her up with him. Caitlin stared at him warily, seeing in his dark, reflective gaze something she didn't recognize. The sun beat down in a blaze of heat; a hot, dry wind blew, lifting her hair to drift around her face, yet she felt a sudden shiver. To her sudden, intense surprise, Lassiter lowered his head and kissed her. Virginia Brown is the award-winning author of nearly fifty novels in historical romance, mystery and general fiction.

Détails: With the same unique vision that brought his now classic Mars trilogy to vivid life, bestselling author Kim Stanley Robinson boldly imagines an alternate history of the last seven hundred years. In his grandest work yet, the acclaimed storyteller constructs a world vastly different from the one we know. . . . “A thoughtful, magisterial alternate history from one of science fiction’s most important writers.”—The New York Times Book Review It is the fourteenth century and one of the most apocalyptic events in human history is set to occur—the coming of the Black Death. History teaches us that a third of Europe’s population was destroyed. But what if the plague had killed 99 percent of the population instead? How would the world have changed? This is a look at the history that could have been—one that stretches across centuries, sees dynasties and nations rise and crumble, and spans horrible famine and magnificent innovation. Through the eyes of soldiers and kings, explorers and philosophers, slaves and scholars, Robinson navigates a world where Buddhism and Islam are the most influential and practiced religions, while Christianity is merely a historical footnote. Probing the most profound questions as only he can, Robinson shines his extraordinary light on the place of religion, culture, power—and even love—in this bold New World. “Exceptional and engrossing.”—New York Post “Ambitious . . . ingenious.”—Newsday

Détails: Acclaimed novelist and columnist Denis Hamill knows the streets that glisten at night and the ones that soak up the dark; he knows the boroughs, the bingo halls, the harbors, and the hangouts. Now, Hamill brings his urban savvy to this new Bobby Emmet mystery set inside a winner-take-all crapshoot, New York City-style.... Empire Island is not the home of liberty. It's no place for a prison. And no immigrants ever passed through its portals. Instead, the abandoned Coast Guard station on the windswept waters of New York harbor is ground zero for an idea whose time has come: casino gambling in the Big Apple. For Bobby, the fight over Empire Island gets personal when a young husband and wife mysteriously vanish from their downtown, rent-controlled Manhattan apartment. The police's main suspect -- landlord Jimmy Chung -- then disappears without a whimper, and Chung's attorney Izzy Gleason turns to Bobby for help. That's when Bobby starts doing what he does best -- turning over stones in a town full of millionaires and madmen, call girls and choirboys. What he finds astounds even him. The whole city is gambling crazy. From underground crap games to mob-backed bookies to the quaint business of church and synagogue Las Vegas nights, millions of dollars are changing hands illegally every day. And the big guys want in. Suddenly Bobby is playing with the heaviest hitters in New York, including the mayor, the state assembly speaker, and two dueling business tycoons: one who's into floating casinos, one who's into real estate, and both who are into a famous female tennis celebrity. As Bobby tries to figure out who is backstabbing who and why, he comes upon the beautiful, vengeance-crazed sister of one of the victims -- and the heart of the case, one that is inexplicably connected with New York City's last honest men: a rabbi, a minister, and a priest. No joke. Edgy, gritty, darkly comic, THROWING 7's is a street-smart novel of corruption, vendettas, and the unlikely bedfellows that ambition and money breed. A single father, a loyal brother, and a man with contacts on every level of the city, Bobby Emmet is playing the one game in town that isn't fixed: where the prize is the truth, and you gamble with your life.

Détails: The episodic history of Britain’s infamous military reconnaissance aircraft, by the author of Vulcan Test Pilot and aviation expert who witnessed it all. The scrapping of the Nimrod program has been one of the most controversial events in the military aviation world for many years. For most of its operational life, from 1969 to date, its contribution to the defense of the realm and its role in offensive duties was, of necessity, often shrouded in secrecy. It was the “eye in the sky” that was vital to a host of activities—from anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, to support of land battles throughout the world, to the Falklands campaign, to combating drug-running. Now the UK is bereft of such a multitasking reconnaissance aircraft. The full story of the Nimrod, and its significance, has now been told. Tony Blackman, who was there at the beginning, test-flew nearly every aircraft, and was at Kinloss on the very day the project was canceled, has written this timely book, covering every facet of its history, its weapons system developments, and its tragic accidents. He writes in an approachable way, making technical subjects understandable, but his conclusions will, inevitably, not be welcomed by everyone.

Détails: A detective returns to the Chinatown of his childhood in this “classic noir, filled with longing, violence, and that uniquely urban melancholy” (Richard Price). After four years on the NYPD, Det. Jack Yu is transferred to the precinct of his childhood: Chinatown. Though he’s the only officer on the beat who speaks Chinese, he’s not entirely at home in the old neighborhood. His father is dead, his childhood friends are now gangsters, and the memory of his murdered blood brother is all too fresh. A secret society of organized smugglers and gamblers run half the precinct; vicious gangs rule the rest. Assigned to catch a serial rapist, he’s just getting used to the streets again when community leader and tong boss Uncle Four is gunned down. And his beautiful young mistress, just arrived from Hong Kong, goes missing. The 99% white, English-speaking force doesn’t know where to begin, and it’s up to Jack to plunge himself into the secretive, closed community of his youth—and come to terms with his painful past—as he searches for a killer lurking just beyond his grasp. “Chang has a cool, measured style that lets in some light . . . on a society that lives by its own rules.” —The New York Times Book Review “For readers who relish noir suspense, it doesn’t get much better than this stunning novel.” —The Boston Globe “All the expected locales are here—gambling and dance halls, brothels, secret societies—but the author, who grew up in Chinatown, keeps things fresh by inserting Chinese phrases and explicating cultural folkways on nearly every page . . . This is a nasty, terse slice of noir.” —Washington Post Book World “Chinatown Beat is a classic noir, filled with longing, violence, and that uniquely urban melancholy, but it also brings something new to the table, a loving specificity of a people and place, the multicultures of New York’s Chinatown, that has rarely if ever been encountered in fiction before. A real discovery.” —Richard Price, author of Lush Life, a New York Times Notable Book of the Year

Since his untimely death in 2002 Joe Strummer has been mourned as a rock'n'roll icon. The enormous sense of loss felt at his death reinforced the importance of The Clash. As time goes by the band just seem to grow in terms of influence and impact; they changed the shape of music and established a benchmark for how exciting a rock band can be. In Joe Strummer and the Legend of The Clash, author and journalist Kris Needs tells the story of The Clash with a special focus on Joe Strummer - his life history, his personal passions and his politics. Kris Needs combines his own anecdotes and press reports, plus exclusive interviews with Joe's closest friends, who include Mick Jones, his songwriting partner in The Clash and Don Letts the punk filmmaker, to breathe life into the legend that was Joe Strummer and The Clash. As a young journalist on tour with all of punk's biggest names, Kris forged life-long friendships with all the scene's key figures, while witnessing their unbelievable exploits first-hand. One of the first journalists to see The Clash live, Kris championed the band from the start, becoming close friends with Joe Strummer and the rest of the group, accompanying them on many major tours, and being present at pivotal moments in their career. Weaving in his own material from the era, with a wealth of biographical detail, Needs illuminates Joe's story with accounts of life-changing gigs, on-the-road antics and the recording sessions that produced classic music. Needs looks at Joe's motivations and passions, by drawing on his own experiences with him throughout their friendship, providing an insight into the beliefs and ideals that resonate in The Clash's music. Joe Strummer and the Legend of The Clash conveys the white-hot excitement of their gigs and the intense emotions their music caused, while providing an account of the life and times of Joe Strummer, a true punk pioneer.

Détails: Looking at texts written throughout the careers of Edith Wharton, Ellen La Motte, Mary Borden, Thomas Boyd, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Laurence Stallings, and Ernest Hemingway, American Writers and World War I argues that authors' war writing continuously evolved in response to developments in their professional and personal lives. Recent research has focused on constituencies of identity—such as gender, race, and politics—registered in American Great War writing. Rather than being dominated by their perceived membership of such socio-political categories, this study argues that writers reacted to and represented the war in complex ways which were frequently linked to the exigencies of maintaining a career as a professional author. War writing was implicated in, and influenced by, wider cultural forces such as governmental censorship, the publishing business, advertising, and the Hollywood film industry. American Writers and World War I argues that even authors' hallmark 'anti-war' works are in fact characterized by an awareness of the war's nuanced effects on society and individuals. By tracking authors' war writing throughout their entire careers—in well-known texts, autobiography, correspondence, and neglected works—this study contends that writers' reactions were multifaceted, and subject to change—in response to their developments as writers and individuals. This work also uncovers the hitherto unexplored importance of American cultural and literary precedents which offered writers means of assessing the war. Ultimately, the volume argues, American World War I writing was highly personal, complex, and idiosyncratic.

Détails: At a time when Steve Jobs was only a teenager and Mark Zuckerberg wasn’t even born, a group of visionary engineers and designers—some of them only high school students—in the late 1960s and 1970s created a computer system called PLATO, which was light-years ahead in experimenting with how people would learn, engage, communicate, and play through connected computers. Not only did PLATO engineers make significant hardware breakthroughs with plasma displays and touch screens but PLATO programmers also came up with a long list of software innovations: chat rooms, instant messaging, message boards, screen savers, multiplayer games, online newspapers, interactive fiction, and emoticons. Together, the PLATO community pioneered what we now collectively engage in as cyberculture. They were among the first to identify and also realize the potential and scope of the social interconnectivity of computers, well before the creation of the internet. PLATO was the foundational model for every online community that was to follow in its footsteps. The Friendly Orange Glow is the first history to recount in fascinating detail the remarkable accomplishments and inspiring personal stories of the PLATO community. The addictive nature of PLATO both ruined many a college career and launched pathbreaking multimillion-dollar software products. Its development, impact, and eventual disappearance provides an instructive case study of technological innovation and disruption, project management, and missed opportunities. Above all, The Friendly Orange Glow at last reveals new perspectives on the origins of social computing and our internet-infatuated world.

Détails: New York Times Notable Book of 2015 Kirkus Reviews Best Fiction Book of 2015 Finalist for the 2015 Kirkus Prize for Fiction Winner of a Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize Hailed by The New York Times for its “wildly ambitious...dazzling use of language” and “mesmerizing storytelling,” The Incarnations is a “brilliant, mind-expanding, and wildly original novel” (Chris Cleave) about a Beijing taxi driver whose past incarnations over one thousand years haunt him through searing letters sent by his mysterious soulmate. Who are you? you must be wondering. I am your soulmate, your old friend, and I have come back to this city of sixteen million in search of you. So begins the first letter that falls into Wang’s lap as he flips down the visor in his taxi. The letters that follow are filled with the stories of Wang’s previous lives—from escaping a marriage to a spirit bride, to being a slave on the run from Genghis Khan, to living as a fisherman during the Opium Wars, and being a teenager on the Red Guard during the cultural revolution—bound to his mysterious “soulmate,” spanning one thousand years of betrayal and intrigue. As the letters continue to appear seemingly out of thin air, Wang becomes convinced that someone is watching him—someone who claims to have known him for over a century. And with each letter, Wang feels the watcher growing closer and closer… Seamlessly weaving Chinese folklore, history, literary classics, and the notion of reincarnation, this is a taut and gripping novel that reveals the cyclical nature of history as it hints that the past is never truly settled.

Détails: There is a mistyeyed vision of Bhutan which has popularized it as ‘the last Shangrila’, the hidden Himalayan jewel, the travel destination of celebrities and uniqueexperiencehunters. We are not entirely comfortable with this image. Bhutan has undoubtedly become the focus of considerable media attention in the last few years. Articles appear regularly on its substitution of happiness for money as the indicator of the country’s wealth. Television programs, books, visits by personalities – all have served to bring Bhutan to global awareness. This attention only serves to increase pressure on the culture to become like any other. How has Bhutan resisted the impact of globalisation which has had such a homogenizing affect on most other countries in the world? A practice, until recently, of selfimposed isolation from the rest of the world, the Buddhist tradition, and the lack of any successful foreign invader have combined to produce a living culture that is as unique as it is fragile. This fragility suggested the need to document a context that seemed on the verge of change. Our second visit in 2008 confirmed our sense of immanent change, as we could see for ourselves the ways in which ‘international culture’ was beginning to appear: the first escalator in the country, widening the main road from single track to dual carriageway, the first democratic election, the availability of satellite television, and internet expansion... Nevertheless, we continue to feel that in Bhutan there is a different ‘way of knowing.’ We have worked with staff at the University to try to capture something of this in three different forms: • chapters written by Bhutanese individuals about the culture, landscape, education and folklore • extracts from interviews with university staff and associates to draw out particular characteristics of Bhutan which would be of interest to Western readers • photographs of Bhutan which provide a different ‘view’ of the country to complement the text. The subject matter has been chosen by Bhutanese staff at the Royal University of Bhutan as an expression of their understanding of their own land. There are conventional travel books about Bhutan available and we have not attempted to contribute to this literature. Bhutan: Ways of Knowing is a book which reflects Bhutanese understanding of their country. We hope that you will find these contributions as interesting and thoughtprovoking as we do, and that you, too, will find a different way of knowing about Bhutan.

Détails: When the Fox Film Corporation merged with Twentieth Century Pictures in 1935, the company posed little threat to industry juggernauts such as Paramount and MGM. In the years that followed however, guided by executives Darryl F. Zanuck and Spyros Skouras, it soon emerged as one of the most important studios. Though working from separate offices in New York and Los Angeles and often of two different minds, the two men navigated Twentieth Century-Fox through the trials of the World War II boom, the birth of television, the Hollywood Blacklist, and more to an era of exceptional success, which included what was then the highest grossing movie of all time, The Sound of Music. Twentieth Century-Fox is a comprehensive examination of the studio’s transformation during the Zanuck-Skouras era. Instead of limiting his scope to the Hollywood production studio, Lev also delves into the corporate strategies, distribution models, government relations, and technological innovations that were the responsibilities of the New York headquarters. Moving chronologically, he examines the corporate history before analyzing individual films produced by Twentieth Century-Fox during that period. Drawn largely from original archival research, Twentieth Century-Fox offers not only enlightening analyses and new insights into the films and the history of the company, but also affords the reader a unique perspective from which to view the evolution of the entire film industry.

Détails: This book is the autobiography of one of the old style 'general' surgeons - those who could still cope with every sort of surgical work without needing to refer it to a specialist - the Compleat Surgeon of its title. Born in 1889, he started by getting first class honours at Cambridge in each of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, whilst also taking his first and second MBs over a period of only four years before going to St. Thomas's Hospital in London in 1913. There he went into Casualty before going out onto 'The District' (Lambeth) to qualify as a House Surgeon /Casualty Officer. Completion of this part of his training coincided with the outbreak of World War 1. Taken into the RAMC, he was sent to work on a hospital ship for Indian soldiers, at a casualty clearing station in France and in a hospital in Aldershot. In the midst of all that he married the Irish nurse whom he had met at Addenbrookes Hospital and to whom he had got engaged whilst at Cambridge During the war, those senior surgeons at St. Thomas's who passed the pre-war age limit of 60 were retained, but when the war ended, they all retired, leaving a fair number of posts to be filled. He was appointed to be an Honorary Surgeon. Honorary indeed, as with it came only a nominal salary. To survive he needed to set up for private practice and to take on work from more senior surgeons, work that might be less skilled, but was essential to back up their practices as well as covering for them during weekends and holidays. He was very successful and soon built up a private practice of his own with a house in Harley Street. He describes the wide variety of the cases given to him, and those who came to him in his own practice. From 1927 to 1960, he and another surgeon at St. Thomas's, Peter H Mitchiner, wrote, and revised annually, a worldwide recognised book on surgery. Separate chapters describe his work in St.Thomas's and other hospitals and in private practice and for various aspects of his work like night calls, the Metropolitan Police, the General Strike, the start of World War 2, nursing homes, the theatre, and Doctors, Doctors' children, and women as patients, and hobbies like railways and racing at Brooklands. Before he reached 65, the retirement age for NHS hospital surgeons, he read and passed all his law exams, and became Chairman of his local Bench.

After twenty years Max Binder is still in love with his fiery wife, Maggie, and is determined to get her the perfect fortieth birthday gift. But Max’s singular desire — to make his wife happy — leads to an unexpected event that changes the course of his family’s life and touches the people who make up their western prairie city. Set over the course of a single year, Once More With Feeling tells the story of this city through intersecting moments and interconnected lives. The colourful citizens who make up the community are marked by transformation, upheaval, and loss: the worker at a downtown soup kitchen who recognizes a kindred spirit amongst the homeless; the aging sisters who everywhere see the fleeting ghosts of two missing neighbourhood children; a communal voice of mothers anxious for the future of their children in the discomfiting world they inhabit. Award-winning author Méira Cook has crafted a novel that is at once funny, poignant, and yes, full of feeling.
