Détails: The hilarious New York Times bestselling phenomenon and the perfect funny gift! New York Times bestselling author Wendy Northcutt is back, asking, Have we evolved at all? The answer: Not all of us. What crazy cocktail of DNA leads Homo sapiens to do pull-ups off the edge of a seventh-floor balcony or wrap their lips around a paintball gun and pull the trigger? How about offering a beer to a bear or self-testing a Taser? Why not go joyriding in a shopping cart strapped to an SUV or jump a drawbridge on a bicycle? Fully illustrated with over a hundred new jaw-dropping and side-splitting feats of stupidity—and including science essays by guest writers and answers to FAQs about evolution in action—The Darwin Awards Next Evolution continues the tradition of honoring the victims of appallingly poor survival instinct who selflessly improve our gene pool by removing themselves from it.

The Wandering Jew, the story of the Jewish shoemaker who is doomed to wander the Earth until the Second Coming . William Tell, the Swiss hero who shot an apple off his son's head . Saint George, a Christian who suffered seven torturous deaths only to be revived each time, healthy and unhurt . Détails: “One of the most dazzling and devastating novels I’ve read in a long time...Readers of Fruit of the Drunken Tree will surely be transformed.” --San Francisco Chronicle “Simultaneously propulsive and poetic, reminiscent of Isabel Allende...Listen to this new author’s voice — she has something powerful to say.” --Entertainment Weekly A mesmerizing debut set in Colombia at the height Pablo Escobar's violent reign about a sheltered young girl and a teenage maid who strike an unlikely friendship that threatens to undo them both Seven-year-old Chula and her older sister Cassandra enjoy carefree lives thanks to their gated community in Bogotá, but the threat of kidnappings, car bombs, and assassinations hover just outside the neighborhood walls, where the godlike drug lord Pablo Escobar continues to elude authorities and capture the attention of the nation. When their mother hires Petrona, a live-in-maid from the city's guerrilla-occupied slum, Chula makes it her mission to understand Petrona's mysterious ways. But Petrona's unusual behavior belies more than shyness. She is a young woman crumbling under the burden of providing for her family as the rip tide of first love pulls her in the opposite direction. As both girls' families scramble to maintain stability amidst the rapidly escalating conflict, Petrona and Chula find themselves entangled in a web of secrecy that will force them both to choose between sacrifice and betrayal. Inspired by the author's own life, and told through the alternating perspectives of the willful Chula and the achingly hopeful Petrona, Fruit of the Drunken Tree contrasts two very different, but inextricably linked coming-of-age stories. In lush prose, Rojas Contreras has written a powerful testament to the impossible choices women are often forced to make in the face of violence and the unexpected connections that can blossom out of desperation.

Détails: An... instructive instance of the development of theological doctrine is to be found in the history of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin. Up to the twelfth century it was not questioned that the Virgin was conceived and born in sin, and doctors like St. Anselm found their only difficulty in explaining how Christ could be born sinless from a sinner. With the growth of Mariolatry, however, there came a popular tendency to regard the Virgin as free from all human corruption... -from "Chapter VIII: Intellect and Faith" Considered America's first great scholar of the Middle Ages and a trailblazing proponent of utilizing primary sources when inquiring into the past, Henry Charles Lea gave us what is still a vital history of the centuries-long reign of terror known as the Inquisition. A passionate account of mass hysteria, its spiritual and intellectual roots, and its "inevitable" evolution, this is grimly fascinating and highly readable, an excellent investigation into one of the foundations of modern civilization the repercussions of which are still being felt today. Volume 3 of this 3-volume 1888 work looks at how the Inquisition impacted ideas about scholarship, faith, and civic culture: how political heresy was used by the Church, the rise of sects including the spiritual Franciscans and the heretical Fraticelli, and the ironic flowering of belief in sorcery, witchcraft, and other occult arts. American historian and publisher HENRY CHARLES LEA (1825-1909) also wrote Superstition and Force (1866), Historical Sketch of Sacerdotal Celibacy (1867), and History of the Inquisition of Spain (1906-1908).

Détails: Within the human system there are certain archetypes, centers, or vortexes of energy. As this energy or power exists at a different level than our conscious awareness it remains essentially dormant with most people, but when activated usually through meditation this force has a most profound influence upon our psychological, spiritual and physical nature. As this inner, subtle energy plays such a vital role in our overall being there is much to be gained from understanding this force, and how to benefit from its power. This information can be found in the ancient spiritual teachings of the Jewish Kabbala and the Hindu Kundalini Yoga, but the complexity of these teachings, particularly with Kabbala, makes it difficult to find useful answers as to how this inner power can be utilized. In The Green Serpent and the Tree, Dr. Judd cuts through the confusing terminology of these teachings and, in an easy-to-read style using practical examples and illustrations, logically explains:The inner nature of man and structure of the soul. How Kabbala and Kundalini Yoga can be reconciled, and how they augment each other. The difference between the symbols of The Tree of Life, and The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Why the seven inner centers (Chakras) of Kundalini Yoga are the same as the ten centers (Sefirot) of Kabbala. The significance of the Green Serpent (Kundalini) and the functions of the various channels that connect the inner centers. The different centers, with a detailed description of their psychological and spiritual influence.Relationship of meditation with releasing the power from the inner centers. The practical value of meditation, its four stages, and the physical, psychological, psychic and spiritual effects. The risks involved in releasing these inner powers, and how to avoid them. The reason for the inter-relationship between Kabbala and Kundalini Yoga, and their original source. Although this book is written in an explanatory style which guides the layman through the intricacies of these two teachings as they relate to our inner powers, the material content contains much that will interest the more advanced student. Based upon thorough research, Dr. Judd outlines in logical steps why,The Tree symbol that is frequently referred to as the Tree of Life is misnamed.Any attempt to reconcile the Chakras with the Sefirot using the wrong Tree symbol will lead to inaccurate conclusions. The position of the Sefirot changes depending upon which Tree symbol is used. There are three central channels that connect the Chakras, rather than the one that is usually shown, and Kabbala supports this fact. This explains the different levels of power released from the same Chakra. Why some of the practices used to open the Chakras involve considerable risks Anyone who wishes to expand their knowledge of Kabbala, Kundalini Yoga, the inner nature and powers of man, meditation, and the safe way to travel on the journey within, will greatly benefit from the information in this book.

The only survivors are Chris and a boy named Frank, who hates Chris immediately. Chris and Frank have no radio, no flares, no food. Suddenly, they've got to find a way to forage, fish and scavenge supplies from the shore. Chris likes the company of a curious friendly raven more than he likes the prickly Frank. There in the wilderness of Kodiak, they discover a bond they didn't expect, and through it, the compassion and teamwork that might truly be the path to rescue.

Détails: At the beginning of this new millennium there is an increasing tension between the doctrines of both orthodox Christianity and Judaism, and the changing beliefs of modern society. This is particularly noticeable in such areas as the role of women, the human relationship with God, and life after death, as new ideas clash with religious dogmas that, based upon a literal acceptance of the Creation Story in Genesis, suggest the inferiority of women, the inherent sinfulness of humanity, an active Devil, and an everlasting Hell. When this ancient Hebrew Paradisial tale is considered as a myth, however, rather than historical fact, and interpreted from the perspective of what the Jewish mystics (kabbalists) say was the original intent, then all the weak and demeaning ideas are removed. When Adam, Eve, the serpent, tree, etc., are read as archetypal figures an entirely different meaning is revealed that removes the confusion which is contributing to the existing tensions in society. This understanding presents a new, constructive look at Scripture for a wide audience of both Christian and Jewish women and men as well as those who are outside those two faiths with the exception of the most orthodox Jews, and those fundamentalist Christians who insist on a literal reading of the Bible. The Female, the Tree, and Creation, 1) explains the original meaning of the Adam and Eve tale as interpreted by Jewish kabbalists, 2) traces the themes of the Creation Story (e.g. the role of women, human relationship with God, sin, evil, etc.), through Judaism and early Christianity, and their evolvement in public consciousness, orthodox religion, and other spiritual teachings, up to the present time, 3) shows the practical value of Kabbalah in helping to resolve the controversies of today, irrespective of ones cultural or religious background, and 4) interprets historical trends to logically suggest the likely direction of mans consciousness and institutionalized religion in the 21st century. 5) This manuscript is enhanced by separate Introductions from Rabbi Gelberman (New York), and Dr. Carol Parrish-Harra, President, Sancta Sophia Seminary (Oklahoma). 6) The length of the manuscript is approximately 66,000 words, and consists of six chapters and an Appendix. A condensed outline follows. Chapter One: The Significance of Myth: Uses illustrative stories to explain the value of myth, and how the Creation Story fits a mythical pattern. Chapter Two: Symbols in the Adam and Eve Story An in-depth explanation and historical background of the various symbols (Tree, Serpent, etc.) that appear in this story. Chapter Three: The Source: The source of the Creation Story symbols, particularly the female and the serpent. I.. Moses and Egypt II. Mythic Formation. How and why the Creation Story was constructed along the lines of kabbalstic mysticism to covertly deliver a message of the sacredness of the female, the divinity of humanity, and the nature of sin and evil. Chapter Four: Jewish Mysticism and the Creation Story: I. Jewish Mysticism. Explains Jewish mysticism, traces the early evolvement of Kabbalah, and explains the kabbalists concept of the Sefirot. II. The Sefirot and Creation: An in-depth explanation of Kabbalah as it relates to the Creation Story to show the original, intended meaning of this tale. Chapter Five: Sin, Guilt and Evil. I. Jewish Thought. II. Christian Thought. The why and how the sense of sin, guilt and evil that pervades the theological presentation of the Creation Story became a part of Jewish and Christian thought. The viewpoint of Jewish and Christian mysticism. Chapter Six: Past, Present and Future. I. Cyclical Changes . Comparison of the radical disruption of traditional religious ways that to

Emigrating to Israel in 1983, she takes us to a boarding school where she cares for newly arrived Ethiopian teenage immigrants. We follow her next to a small Israeli Arab town. In 1988, she takes us back to China as it can never be seen again, and through her students' lives, watches its tumultuous changes from then until 2005. Taiwan, Macau, Bali, and Korea also become "home," while New Zealand, Fiji, Turkey, Vietnam, Russia, and Iceland, among others, beckon briefly, but she always returns to China. Through the enthralling details of the everyday life of ordinary people, the reader virtually lives their struggles, fears, achievements, joys and dreams. Curiosity, intensity, and the journals she keeps along the way are her constant traveling companions. This independent budget traveler keenly experiences cultures, like a hummingbird with feet planted firmly in mid-air, hovering, drinking deeply, and then flitting away to return another day. Interwoven throughout are her personal, emotional, and spiritual journeys. This is a true life odyssey any seasoned or armchair traveler will want to explore.
