Détails: From one of the most innovative and acclaimed biblical commentators at work today, here is a revolutionary analysis of the intersection between religion and psychoanalysis in the stories of the men and women of the Bible. For centuries scholars and rabbis have wrestled with the biblical narrative, attempting to answer the questions that arise from a plain reading of the text. In The Murmuring Deep, Avivah Zornberg informs her literary analysis of the text with concepts drawn from Freud, Winnicott, Laplanche, and other psychoanalytic thinkers to give us a new understanding of the desires and motivations of the men and women whose stories form the basis of the Bible. Through close readings of the biblical and midrashic texts, Zornberg makes a powerful argument for the idea that the creators of the midrashic commentary, the medieval rabbinic commentators, and the Hassidic commentators were themselves on some level aware of the complex interplay between conscious and unconscious levels of experience and used this knowledge in their interpretations. In her analysis of the stories of Adam and Eve, Noah, Jonah, Abraham, Rebecca, Isaac, Joseph and his brothers, Ruth, and Esther–how they communicated with the world around them, with God, and with the various parts of their selves–Zornberg offers fascinating insights into the interaction between consciousness and unconsciousness. In discussing why God has to “seduce” Adam into entering the Garden of Eden or why Jonah thinks he can hide from God by getting on a ship, Zornberg enhances our appreciation of the Bible as the foundational text in our quest to understand what it means to be human.

Détails: The Shining meets The Conjuring in this scary and suspenseful novel “akin to old Stephen King novels” (School Library Journal). The fact that neither of her parents wants to deal with her is nothing new to Penny. She’s used to being discussed like a problem, a problem her mother has finally passed on to her father. What she hasn’t gotten used to is her stepmother…especially when she finds out that she’ll have to spend the summer with April in the remote woods of Washington to restore a broken-down old house. Set deep in a dense forest, the old Carver House is filled with abandoned antique furniture, rich architectural details, and its own chilling past. The only respite Penny can find away from April’s renovations is in Miller, the young guy who runs the local general store. He’s her only chance at a normal and enjoyable summer. But Miller has his own connection to the Carver house, and it’s one that goes beyond the mysterious tapping Penny hears at her window, the handprints she finds smudging the glass panes, and the visions of children who beckon Penny to follow them into the dark woods. Miller’s past just might threaten to become the terror of Penny’s future…

Détails: 'I have learned to be content in whatever [state] I am'' (Phil. 4:11) Anyone who lacks true contentment may find it in this book. If not, it will be because that one would not follow the very clear and simple instructions given. The teaching is from the Bible, yet it must be described as unique. Nowhere else will you find such unusual, but Biblically authenticated thoughts: He will teach you that contentment lies in subtraction, not in addition; that the ABC's of Christianity are nothing like what you thought them to be; that there is a mystery of contentment, but that once you have learned the way from Christ's word, you will be able to attain such a depth of contentment as you never before dreamed existed. This is a key book for building up Christian maturity. Christian Contentment, what is it? ''It is a sweet, inward heart thing. It is a work of the Spirit indoors. It is a box of precious ointment, very comforting and useful for troubled hearts in times of troubled conditions.

Détails: Despite, or even because of their tumultuous history, Palestinians are renowned for being prolific cultural producers, creating many of the Arab world's most iconic works of literature. In particular, the Palestinian short story stands out for its unique interplay between literary texts and the political and historical contexts from which they emerge. Palestinian Literature in Exile is the first English language study to explore this unique genre. Joseph Farag employs an interdisciplinary approach to examine the political function of literary texts and the manner in which cultural production responds to crucial moments in Palestinian history. Drawing from the works of Samira Azzam, Ghassan Kanafani and Ibrahim Nasrallah, Farag traces developments in the short story as they relate to the pivotal events of what the Palestinians call the Nakba ('catastrophe'), Naksa ('defeat') and First Intifada ('uprising'). In analysing several as yet un-translated works, Farag makes an original contribution to the subject of exilic identity and subjectivity in Palestinian literature. This book offers the opportunity to engage with literary works as well to learn from a literary account of history. It is a subject of interest for students and scholars of both Arabic literature and Middle East studies.

Détails: Sense and Sensibility is a novel by Jane Austen, and was her first published work. A work of romantic fiction, better known as a comedy of manners, Sense and Sensibility is set in southwest England, London and Kent and portrays the life and loves of the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne. The novel follows the young ladies to their new home, a meagre cottage on a distant relative's property, where they experience love, romance and heartbreak. The philosophical resolution of the novel is ambiguous: the reader must decide whether sense and sensibility have truly merged. Austen biographer Claire Tomalin argues that Sense and Sensibility has a "wobble in its approach," which developed because Austen, in the course of writing the novel, gradually became less certain about whether sense or sensibility should triumph. Austen characterises Marianne as a sweet lady with attractive qualities: intelligence, musical talent, frankness, and the capacity to love deeply. She also acknowledges that Willoughby, with all his faults, continues to love and, in some measure, appreciate Marianne. For these reasons, some readers find Marianne's ultimate marriage to Colonel Brandon an unsatisfactory ending. Other interpretations, however, have argued that Austen's intention was not to debate the superior value of either sense or sensibility in good judgement, but rather to demonstrate that both are equally as important but must be applied with good balance to one another.

Détails: In The Murmuring Trees delves into nature, mythology and fantasy through evocative prose and poetry, taking readers to a time and place where myths were real and legends walked amongst men. It retells classic stories of gods and monsters, and mans place within natures grandeur, capturing the essence of these timeless tales while instilling in them a modern twist unique to R. Tirrell Leonard Jr. "Imaginative poems and prose of great spirit, rich creativity, and three-dimensional imagery." The Columbia Review. In The Murmuring Trees (2012) Reviewed By: The Editorial Board The Editorial Board of The Columbia Review selects new books and films of interest, as well as paid submissions and sponsored reviews from authors, publishers, directors, agents and producers. In The Murmuring Trees by R. Tirrell Leonard JR. is an imaginative volume of poems and prose of great spirit, rich creativity, and three-dimensional imagery. Readers of poetry often seek to understand not only the meaning of the words themselves, but to perceive who the poet really is. One might speculate that Leonard may be revealing himself best with the first line in the poem A Post in Furies Winds: I know I differ from the normal view This collection of poems and prose is also a unique exploration of a common sentiment love but here it is to a place, as the title of another song reads: A Magical Country Dance. One cannot miss Mr. Leonards deep love for the State of Massachusetts both its people (Contemporary and natives) and its raw physical beauty (land and coast). Most of the pieces may fit on one page, but many would serve as food for thought for a whole evening. And while the poet speaks of losing his voice, his writing comes across loud and clear with great charm and natural rythm. Adding to this volumes value for the reader are snippets of true perception and tickling humor. For example, who among us, lovers of poetry, dont remember a sleepless night made longer by the crickets singing through the open window, driving us near the brink. In particular, some of Mr. Leonards poetry attains the cloak of youthful wit, alluding to figures from the sphere of fantasy and the world of magic, which would make much of this volume easily accessible and happily enjoyable for younger readers, as well. In summary, this meticulous and beautiful collection leaves the reader shaken, elated and reflective, perhaps as the poet concludes the title poem (or close to it), In Murmurings Through Trees: Skies with lightning flashes bright and brawling, fill my mind with wonders still and installing. Indeed!

Détails: In this long-awaited follow-up to his 2003 book on Genesis, humanist scholar Leon Kass explores how Exodus raises and then answers the central political questions of what defines a nation and how a nation should govern itself. Considered by some the most important book in the Hebrew Bible, Exodus tells the story of the Jewish people from their enslavement in Egypt through their liberation under Moses’s leadership to their covenantal founding at Sinai and the building of the Tabernacle. In Kass’s analysis, these events begin the slow process of learning how to stop thinking like slaves and become an independent people. The Israelites ultimately found their nation on three elements: a shared narrative that instills empathy for the poor and the suffering, the uplifting rule of a moral law, and devotion to a higher common purpose. These elements, Kass argues, remain the essential principles for any freedom-loving nation today.
