Détails: This volume reshapes our understanding of British literary culture from 1945-1975 by exploring the richness and diversity of women’s writing of this period. Essays by leading scholars reveal the range and intensity of women writers’ engagement with post-war transformations including the founding of the Welfare State, the gradual liberalization of attitudes to gender and sexuality and the reconfiguration of Britain and the empire in the context of the Cold War. Attending closely to the politics of form, the sixteen essays range across ‘literary’, ‘middlebrow’ and ‘popular’ genres, including espionage thrillers and historical fiction, children’s literature and science fiction, as well as poetry, drama and journalism. They examine issues including realism and experimentalism, education, class and politics, the emergence of ‘second-wave’ feminism, responses to the Holocaust and mass migration and diaspora. The volume offers an exciting reassessment of women’s writing at a time of radical social change and rapid cultural expansion.

This turns out to be a challenge as Amanda seems to possess an imagination as intriguing as it is dangerous. A shocking refusal... Lady Hester stuns both him and her family when she refuses him. At her age, no one would expect her to turn down such an eligible suitor. But Lady Hester has met the indomitable Amanda. How can the quiet, intelligent Hester hope to compete with such a lively young lady? WHAT READERS ARE SAYING: "Wonderful Heyer! You must read this one, really it's one of her best ... charming and funny." "Crisp, funny, and wonderful to read." "The best Regency-era romance novel ever written ... I had exactly the same reaction to Sprig Muslin that I had with Austen's Pride and Prejudice-an overwhelming sense of relief and satisfaction that it had ended in exactly the way I had wanted it to ... So excellently done and such fun!" "Hilarious. I recommend Georgette Heyer to anyone in need of a bit of cheering up."

Détails: The first novel by the greatest author of historical romance in the world - a wonderful tale of love and adventure set in Heyer's Regency England. Jack Carstares, the disgraced Earl of Wyncham, left England seven long years ago, sacrificing his honour for that of his brother when he was accused of cheating at cards. Now he is back, roaming his beloved South Country in the disguise of a highwayman. Not long after his return, he encounters his old adversary, the libertine Duke of Andover, just in time to dispute at the point of his sword the attempted abduction of a society beauty. But foiled once, the 'Black Moth' has no intention of failing again. With this peerlessly romantic and dashing story shows Georgette Heyer's great skills fully formed even at an incredibly young age - and how she was set to work over the hearts of readers around the world.

Détails: RICHARD HARDING DAVIS, a Philadelphia-born journalist, led a mythic life, one full of adventure, high drama, and at least one close call with Germans who thought he was a spy during World War I. Davis was a respected reporter and editor who described foreign events to the U.S. during the late 1800s and early 1900s. He covered the globe while working as war correspondent for Harper's and other publications, and reported on the Spanish War, the Spanish-American War in Cuba, and the Boer War. During World War I, he was captured by the Germans, who accused him of being a British spy. His reporting also helped to create the Rough Riders legend associated with Teddy Roosevelt. He collected many of his articles in the books Rulers of the Mediterranean, About Paris, and Three Gringos in Venezuela and Central America. This book, written by the journalist's brother, provides an intimate look at a writer who led a very public life.
