Détails: This early work by Alfred Russel Wallace was originally published in 1853 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Palm Trees of the Amazon and their Uses' is an article detailing Wallace's observations during his travels in South America. Alfred Russel Wallace was born on 8th January 1823 in the village of Llanbadoc, in Monmouthshire, Wales. Wallace was inspired by the travelling naturalists of the day and decided to begin his exploration career collecting specimens in the Amazon rainforest. He explored the Rio Negra for four years, making notes on the peoples and languages he encountered as well as the geography, flora, and fauna. While travelling, Wallace refined his thoughts about evolution and in 1858 he outlined his theory of natural selection in an article he sent to Charles Darwin. Wallace made a huge contribution to the natural sciences and he will continue to be remembered as one of the key figures in the development of evolutionary theory.

Détails: The list of species named after him is long. His contributions to the foundations of modern science are inestimable. German naturalist and explorer ALEXANDER VON HUMBOLDT (1769-1859) was called by Charles Darwin "the greatest traveling scientist who ever lived" and by Thomas Jefferson "the most important scientist whom I have met." From 1799 to 1804, Von Humboldt traveled with French botanist AIM JACQUES ALEXANDRE BONPLAND (1773-1858) in Latin America, the first exploration from a scientific perspective of this vital region of the planet, and afterward, they produced this groundbreaking three-volume work, which introduced Europeans to this previously mysterious land. First published in French in 1807, this is a replica of an 1851 English-language edition. In Volume III, the explorers visit Spanish Guiana and "El Dorado," journey across Colombia, contrast the population of the West India islands with that of "the New Continent," discuss the politics of Cuba, and more.

Détails: Longarm finds out just how bad the bad girls of Rio Blanco can be! U.S. Deputy Marshal Custis Long is off to Rio Blanco County to catch some thieves stealing Indian Agency cattle. Two of the rustlers are women, so it should be interesting. But Longarm is being stalked by two hired killers. Some very wealthy folks want him dead so badly that they’ve secretly put a bigger bounty on his head than the James Boys and Billy the Kid combined. They say that Longarm is Colorado’s answer to the late Wild Bill. But lately, he has trouble enough to overwhelm even the legendary Hickok. After he’s forced to kill Turk Tarrington, Longarm has the whole bloodthirsty clan on his trail. And a certain woman who kills the men she seduces hasn’t forgotten that Deputy Marshal Long turned down her advances. As soon as Liza Carver hooks up with her murderous accomplices, she plans to treat herself to the greatest thrill of all—luring Longarm to his death.

Détails: This early work Romance by Ford Madox Ford was originally published in 1903 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introduction. Ford Madox Ford was born Ford Madox Hueffer in Merton, Surrey, England on 17th December 1873. The creative arts ran in his family - Hueffer's grandfather, Ford Madox Brown, was a well-known painter, and his German émigré father was music critic of The Times - and after a brief dalliance with music composition, the young Hueffer began to write. Although Hueffer never attended university, during his early twenties he moved through many intellectual circles, and would later talk of the influence that the "Middle Victorian, tumultuously bearded Great" - men such as John Ruskin and Thomas Carlyle - exerted on him. In 1908, Hueffer founded the English Review, and over the next 15 months published Thomas Hardy, H. G. Wells, Joseph Conrad, Henry James, John Galsworthy and W. B. Yeats, and gave débuts to many authors, including D. H. Lawrence and Norman Douglas. Hueffer's editorship consolidated the classic canon of early modernist literature and saw him earn a reputation as of one of the century's greatest literary editors. Ford's most famous work was his Parade's End tetralogy, which he completed in the 1920's and have now been adapted into a BBC television drama. Ford continued to write through the thirties, producing fiction, non-fiction, and two volumes of autobiography: Return to Yesterday (1931) and It was the Nightingale (1933). In his last years, he taught literature at the Olivet College in Michigan. Ford died on 26th June 1939 in Deauville, France, at the age of 65.

Détails: From the Foreword Umberto Quattrocchi has brought us some amazing and useful works through the various dictionaries that he has compiled. This time it is for two very important plant families the palms and the cycads that are synthesized here in these two volumes. Each entry is fascinating not just for the botany and full nomenclature of the plant species but for all the associated uses, folklore and interactions with other organisms. ...These entries are fascinating glimpses of natural history. ... Botanists, conservationists, ethnobotanists, anthropologists, geographers, bird watchers, naturalists, historians and those of many other disciplines will find these volumes a most valuable and useful resource. It is the sort of book that will be in frequent use in my library. ----- Professor Sir Ghillean Prance FRS, VMH, Former Director, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Following the same format as Umberto Quattrocchi’s highly praised and well-used previous works, The CRC World Dictionary of Palms: Common Names, Scientific Names, Eponyms, Synonyms, and Etymology brings together the vast and scattered literature on palms and cycads to provide better access to information on these economically important plants. Each genus and species has a detailed morphological description and includes a list of synonyms and vernacular names in many languages. Bibliographies accompany each entry which are comprehensive, up-to-date and multi-lingual. The detailed information for every entry on habitats, economic uses, historical and biographical data, botanical exploration, and linguistics will be useful for any library involved with botany, herbal medicine, pharmacognosy, medicinal and natural product chemistry, ecology, ethnobotany, systematics, general plant science, agriculture or horticulture. Umberto Quattrocchi is the author of the bestselling CRC World Dictionary of Plant Names, winner of the prestigious Hanbury Botanical Garden Award. His most recent multi-volume work, CRC World Dictionary of Medicinal and Poisonous Plants, received strong praise as being "... an unparalleled starting place—a tool of first resort for any thoughtful researcher. Quattrocchi and CRC have delivered a dictionary like no other, a learned finger pointing in the right direction." —John de la Parra, Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, from Economic Botany, Vol. 68, 2014

Détails: Paraguay is a vast region in South America, extending very widely in every direction. From Brazil to the kingdoms of Peru and Chili, they reckon 700 Spanish leagues: from the mouth of the river La Plata, to the northern region of the Amazons, 1,100. Some reckon more, some fewer leagues, according as they use German, French, or Spanish miles. Concerning this matter, a determinate opinion must not be expected. These huge tracts of land, receding very far from the Colonies, are not yet rightly explored; possibly, never will be. Geometry is there a rara avis; and were any one capable of measuring the land, and desirous of the attempt, he would want the courage to enter it, deterred either by the fear of savages, or by the difficulties of the journey. Men of our order, seeking out savages for God and the Catholic King, examined the coverts of its forests, the summits of its mountains, and the banks of its remotest rivers, traversing, to the utmost of their ability, every part of the province, always risking, and often losing, their lives. In Peru and Mexico, there is no corner which the Europeans, attracted by the hope of gold, have not searched into; but we are still unacquainted with great part of Paraguay, a region unproductive of gold, and, therefore, wanting the requisite allurement. As for what is discovered, who can deny that it is almost entirely owing to the efforts of the Missionaries? The plains which they traversed, the rivers which they crossed, together with the distances of places, they have noted with the utmost fidelity, though not always with equal art. Paraguay is subject to the King of Spain, in whose authority it is ruled by three governours, and as many bishops. Each province has its governour; the first is that of La Plata, on the banks of which is the city of Buenos-Ayres, the seat of the royal governour, and of a bishop. It is famous for an academy, monasteries for both sexes, a port, and a citadel, which, though impregnable to the assaults of savages, and even of the citizens themselves, would soon yield to the warlike engines of Europeans; the river compensates for the weakness of the walls, ships being prevented, by shoals, from approaching. It is destitute of a wall, ditch, gates, and similar fortifications; defects common to all the other cities of the province. The inhabitants are reckoned at 40,000, the dwellings at about 3000, constructed chiefly of brick, and roofed with tiles; but they are all low, excepting a few of two stories. The churches are handsome, even to the eye of an European. The finest are two of which Primoli, a Roman lay-brother of our order, and now in repute in his native city, was the architect. There are no public fountains, colossal statues, or images of the Saints in the market-place. You may count more carriages in Austrian Vienna in one street, and in one hour, than you can here, in the whole city, during a whole year. Troops of horse may be seen every moment, nor is it surprising, that even those of moderate estate should, in the Spanish tongue, be called Cavalleros. Military rank, the magistracy of the city, and similar dignities, alone confer nobility. The riches of the inhabitants consist rather in cattle, than in money.

Détails: Irving's extensive work on Christopher Columbus is one of the most famous biographies in American history. The name of Washington Irving, prefixed to any work, is in itself a sufficient earnest of liberal sentiment and graceful composition. With generous principles and pure intellectual tastes, he unquestionably unites literary talents of no common order. The subject, also, which he has here chosen for the exercise of his powers, is one, if not of any real novelty, at least abounding both in romantic excitement and philosophical interest. It is a subject in many respects, congenial to his own poetical cast of feeling, his imaginative temperament, his amiable and enlightened spirit, and, above all, to his national enthusiasm as a citizen of that continent, of which the discovery has immortalised the fame of his hero. Endowed with such qualifications, and thus inspired by characteristic fondness for his design, it was easy to anticipate the degree of his success in its accomplishment; and it is needless to say, that he has produced a very amusing and elegant book.

Détails: They may be the two most influential scientists on the modern world whom you've never heard of. German naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) brought a modern understanding of science to lay audiences for the first time with his five-volume masterwork Kosmos, in which he sought to unify humanity's understanding of the natural world. His elder brother, government minister, philosopher, and linguist Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767-1835) pioneered the kind of educational systems that would become the model for those used in the United States and Japan. Here, in one volume, are two monographs on the lives of the great men. HERMANN KLENCKE (1813-1881) expounds on the dramatic influence of Alexander's work on Western thought. GUSTAV SCHLESIER covers the life of Wilhelm, with special emphasis on the politics of his era and how he used them to reform public education. Translated from the German by JULIETTE BAUER and first published in English in 1853, this hard-to-find classic offers the valuable perceptions of authors writing from the time when the authority of these two important men was beginning to be felt. Anyone interested in the history of modern science will find this perspective priceless.

Détails: Rio Amazonas is a novel. The characters never existed, the actions never happened, the words were never said, but, modifying and elaborating the standard assertions of a disclaimer at the beginning, "Salutations, Disclaimer, Etcetera" describes the book's more intricate truth/fiction relationship. A section called "Introductions" begins the story. "Rape is the only honest commerce," says Howard, the entrepreneur, thus announcing one of the book's main themesrape of bodies, minds, and cultures. A group of American museum people in Lima, Peru plan to exploit the country for cultural and personal advantage. Ernest, the exhibit designer/protagonist, attracted to Darci, a cool young museum coordinator, is reluctant to chance an affair, and, moreover, feels outclassed by his male companions. In the main section, the book is divided into three parts, recounting exploits of the American adventurers. With each chapter, Ernest attempts advances in his increasingly fervent pursuit of Darci. Peru's geography is divided north to south into three bands (the desert coast, the highland stronghold of the ancient Inca empire, and the tropical jungle), so the book is divided into parts focused on each area. As, metaphorically, all roads once led to Rome, in Peru, all paths and jet flights lead in and out of Lima on the Pacific desert edge of the country. Lima and the search for Inca gold in the Highlands: goaded into professional conscience by the designer, Franklin O'Rourke, the brash young archeologist on the brink of fame and fortune, is undone by an integrity he did not know he had. Lima and the Coast: Dr. Janus Bodkin, curmudgeonly, womanizing old archeologist, his premier textile discovery ravaged by rich collectors, chooses an immortal interment he had not contemplated. Lima and the Amazon: Dr. Jeffrey Fortune, sensual ethnologist, realizing his own unethical behavior and ready to take the money and run, meets a bloody end in an Indian uprising. A tame, miniature Disney World-in-the-making reverts to mayhem in the Amazon: reality runs amuck. Darci meets a fate better than death in the disorienting aftermath of the localized jungle apocalypse. Uncertain as to their mutual feelings, pursued by hostile savages, Darci and Ernest escape down river. She offers non-committal sex, and he gambles by holding out for love. Truth and fiction merge, uncertainties arise: will love conquer all? will fantasies come true? will art triumph? We all crave happy endings: in a blue mist, Ernest and Darci consummate their love in "Rio Amazonas," a brief "romantic novel," short and sweet. "Postscript": a final page and life everlasting.
